Description

An Introduction to Wavelets is the first volume in a new series, WAVELET ANALYSIS AND ITS APPLICATIONS. This is an introductory treatise on wavelet analysis, with an emphasis on spline wavelets and time-frequency analysis. Among the basic topics covered in this book are time-frequency localization, integral wavelet transforms, dyadic wavelets, frames, spline-wavelets, orthonormal wavelet bases, and wavelet packets. In addition, the author presents a unified treatment of nonorthogonal, semiorthogonal, and orthogonal wavelets. This monograph is self-contained, the only prerequisite being a basic knowledge of function theory and real analysis. It is suitable as a textbook for a beginning course on wavelet analysis and is directed toward both mathematicians and engineers who wish to learn about the subject. Specialists may use this volume as a valuable supplementary reading to the vast literature that has already emerged in this field. This is an introductory treatise on wavelet analysis, with an emphasis on spline-wavelets and time-frequency analysisThis monograph is self-contained, the only prerequisite being a basic knowledge of function theory and real analysisSuitable as a textbook for a beginning course on wavelet analysis

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐The into sounds like a vary informative and helpful book that would be halfway useful and understandable. But on arrival it is a desert filled only with Greek character sets, complex integrations, no illustrations or examples, or coding one might actually use etc. A very dry and barren landscape devoid of helpful our useful examples, distinguished only by a platitude of math characters and ever more complex integrations, unless you’re a PhD in math and savor juicy complex matric analysis this in not your helpline. A book that perhaps is the worst example of making something already complex and difficult to understand even more complex, less informative reference. A big disappointment to say the least.

⭐Not exactly for a total beginner in the field. For a total beginnier, use Walnut’s text on this fascinating subject…

⭐This book will appeal to people who like a “pure mathematics” approach to wavelets.Engineers might prefer to look elsewhere.Prior experience in measure theory helps but the reader will be able to make use of this if he/she has not been exposed to this. The book is self contained, aimed at advanced undergraduates or beginning graduates and can be used to introduce Fourier analysis as well. What I like about the book is how easy it is to follow as everything is made explicit. There are a lot of definitions and rigorous proofs here. If the author wrote other texts I would love to see them.On the other hand this book was published in 1992 which is a long time ago in this new subject. So you should supplement this book with some more recent publications.

⭐I have used the book, teaching a beginning course in wavelets, and it went over well with the students: they like that the proofs are clearly spelled out, and that the presentation is systematic. I supplemented it with S Mallat and Y Meyer’s books. That was to give the course a more algorithmic slant. However, I feel that there are many valid approaches, and that the subject is infinite in all directions.

⭐For those who would like to learn the beauty of Wavelet theory, which is a great finding in Mathematics, this book would shed some light on it. Wavelet is elegant, a simple formula leads to so much interests, the application of Wavelet is everywhere, particularly in modern communications and signal processing, and there is still more waiting for people to explore. Enjoy the new journey.
