Description
A classic text and standard reference for a generation, this volume and its companion are the work of an expert algebraist who taught at Yale for two decades. Nathan Jacobson’s books possess a conceptual and theoretical orientation, and in addition to their value as classroom texts, they serve as valuable references.Volume I explores all of the topics typically covered in undergraduate courses, including the rudiments of set theory, group theory, rings, modules, Galois theory, polynomials, linear algebra, and associative algebra. Its comprehensive treatment extends to such rigorous topics as Lie and Jordan algebras, lattices, and Boolean algebras. Exercises appear throughout the text, along with insightful, carefully explained proofs. Volume II comprises all subjects customary to a first-year graduate course in algebra, and it revisits many topics from Volume I with greater depth and sophistication.
User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐In the 1980’s when the first edition of this text appeared I visited the Boston Museum of Science and Technology. At a mathematics exhibit I found a timeline of great mathematicians in which Jacobson was identified as “the father of modern algebra.” This book, now in its second edition is still widely used at many universities. I read it while I was a student at Yale in the 80’s, and discovered that I missed a lot of material, having originally studied algebra from Herstein and linear algebra from Hoffman and Kunze as an undergrad at Cornell. Jacobson covers a lot more ground and his exercises are more challenging. I love this book, and it is a standard reference for elementary mathematics in my home library.
⭐This is a good book for people who can read the way this book was written. I can read it and enjoy it. Some of my friends and colleagues didn’t like how it was written or how the problems were set up. You could possibly learn better with a used outdated text book
⭐Prompt delivery in spite of the postal bottleneck. Thank you!
⭐This is how the book was shipped. “Inspected” with the cover hanging on by a thread. Sure hope I don’t get charged to replace the book if it gets caught in a light breeze this semester.
⭐This digital print, which I assume was just scanned in with no proofreading whatsoever, has numerous typos that render proofs and exercises incorrect. I have had to consult Google Books three times in today alone … not good. Just buy the print edition.
⭐Well, I have to say finally I find this book. I borrowed this book to learn Algebra when I was an undergraduate student, now this books comes to my hands. The contents is well structured, and a lot of examples are included. I recommed this book strongly!
⭐My review on the Part-II of this text book series holds for this part as well:”Staggeringly in depth text for all Mathematics majors. It does require you to find practice problems elsewhere but treatment of material has been done wisely”
⭐This book is a great reference book. Explanations are clear and you can’t beat the price! Make sure it has what you need.
I found this book very good. But I won’t recommend it for beginners. Beginners can use it alongside Dummit and Foote
⭐Abstract Algebra, 3ed
