Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐Great book ten years ago. Totally useless today. No mention of SSD drives, and lots of other stuff common today. Should not be selling this embarrassingly outdated book today.

⭐I got this book expecting to get a little insight on building a computer, but I never expected the book to be as thorough and understandable as it was. After reading this book, I was able to select parts to build my computer myself. I was able to make sure the parts were compatible and I only needed to use this book as a reference once or twice. The book explains each part necessary to install, including optional parts such as the sound card. Safety was emphasized frequently throughout the book to remind the reader to “ground” themselves before tinkering with the computer parts. After reading this book I was able to build my first computer with additional help from the case and motherboard manuals that came with my computer parts. This book was well worth the money spent to be able to safely make my own computer, with the parts that I wanted, that I’m on right now to write this review.Pros: – Understandable, even for novices – Detailed information about EVERY part – Helpful videos on accompanying disc – Keeps safety in mind constantly – Brief information on computer part choicesCons: – Video assumed that power supply was already installed into computer case, but book explains how to put the power supply in anyway

⭐Shipped quickly. Book and DVD in great shape. The technology in it is out of date at this point, but the computers that i have were built around the same time this was written so, for me, it is an excellent resource. I’d like to build my own PC, but even if i don’t, it will help me to understand what my PC’s “doctor” is talking about …. and may help me to make some of the repairs and upgrades myself. It will also be an excellent foundation for any up-dated PC i might want to build and/or purchase. Excellent reference. (Wish they’d write an updated version, but that would be very difficult to do with the rate technology changes.)

⭐The information is useful even though it was written in 2009. I had to take a star off for the pages being stuck together a bit every 18 pages!

⭐I bought this book, along with “Fix Your Own Computer For Seniors For Dummies” for my ADHD daughter to learn how to repair her own computer. With ADHD, it is always difficult to keep her attention long enough for her to learn something. But with both of these books as reference tools, she recently built her own gaming computer!Of course now she is glued to her computer playing World of Warcraft against her twin brother.. but now she is confident in her ability to fix her own computer should it break again.

⭐This is a good solid book for newbies for hardware learning, don’t get me wrong. It’s just dated. What I mean is that when it talks about hard disk drives, it talks about IDE interfaces and such, not even discussing the SATA interface that is common today. It also doesn’t mention solid state drives. Descriptions are very good and the author is gifted, but he needs to seriously update it. That is the trouble with technical books. They sure do get outdated quickly!

⭐I’ve worked with PCs for over twenty years, but it’s been ten-plus years since I had a need to look inside one other than to add the occasional RAM chip. I decided its time to replace my PC and was disappointed at the configuration options available from Dell,HP, and Sony, so I decided to consider building one with my specific wants in mind.Mark does a wonderful job explaining the basics of what you need to know, what’s important and what’s not important. I read the book in one day and felt completely comfortable specifying my a PC to meet my needs. I’ve already decided what I want in my new PC. I went back and figured out what I would have to add to the HP and Dell configurations to match my own design. Doing it myself looks like I’ll save 20% to 25% ($1,400 vs $1,750-$1,900). Not bad for a day of reading and day of assembly. An added bonus will be the lack of bloat-ware (a/k/a/ useless software) usually installed by HP and Dell. Not surprising, Amazon sells 90% of the components I want so I’ll be making good use my Amazon Prime shipping plan. My UPS guy already thinks I own stock in Amazon, so what’s a few more boxes!

⭐With a title like “Dummies” this book lives up to its name. You want to know how to build a computer. This book and the accompanying videos make doing that as easy as mixing and baking a batch of cookies. Of course, you get a few more options (sort of like walnuts or sprinkles) so you have to read about the options and you get some of the author’s humor to go with it. I would have preferred a more straightforward technical manual on that count, but the book works and will probably turn out to be what most people expect for presentation.

⭐I love the “…for Dummies” books, and this one was certainly a great book once upon a time. But I should have checked the copyright date. It was first published in 2009, 10 years ago now, and the book still might be marginally useful, but only marginally. Like, if you want to build an obsolete PC from scratch. Or perhaps if you have an obsolete PC to repair. The first immediate problems I noticed, kind of randomly, was that there is no mention of SSD drives (of course not, they hadn’t been invented yet), and the book spends time talking about the installation of an internal 3.5″ floppy drive (which nobody makes any more). It would have been nice if the author (or someone) had updated the book for modern users, but no, that hasn’t happened. So this book is only valuable from a historical point of view.

⭐THIS BOOK IS 8 YEARS OUT OF DATE PUBLISHED IN 2009 AND AT LEAST 6 OR MORE WINDOWS OPERATING SYSTEMS OUT OF DATE TOO AS IT REFERS ALL THE TIME TO WINDOWS VISTA. ALL THE SUGGESTED WEBSITES AND PRICES ARE COMPLETELY USELESS. BUY AN UP TO DATE BOOK OR A LOT OF THIS WILL BE TOTALLY USELESS IF YOU WANT TO BUILD A PC.

⭐Good at taking you through the different parts of a PCToo old to be really relevant now. Windows 7 is its time. PC’s have moved on a lot since then. Can get better info online for free!

⭐I have bought several ‘Dummies’ book in the past and always found them to be clear ,concise, informative and very helpful for novices. This was bought for my granddaughter who has just started studying computer science, and I am sure it will be a great help.

⭐Warning: This book is 10 years out of date! Personally, I am being harsh as it’s ideal for my purposes which is restoring a couple of old desktops for fun but if you want this for a guide to build a top of the range gaming PC, you may want to consider another option. Still lots of good information simply put, as you might expect.
