Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐The last SLR camera I had was back in the 70’s. For the last 3 years I’ve used a Canon digital camera (S3 IS) which like all simple digital cameras is not easily able to capture the shallow depth of field that I am seeking, so I upgraded to the Canon Rebel XS. I really wanted to understand all that this camera could do and to select the proper settings for the kind of photographs that I tend to take, as I was at a loss here (the instruction manual only gives you the options — it doesn’t go into any detail about which options one would choose to start off with and how other options could improve your pictures). This book explains everything in very clear detail. And, if you are getting a little bit confused after reading chapters 1-6, chapter 7 is the best — it’s called “Putting it All Together” where it summarizes “all purpose picture taking settings” which, at least, gives you a clue as to what settings you should initially use (and then you can modify your settings after seeing your pictures, if necessary). It’s a great book, and I highly recommend it to anyone who has just upgraded to a Canon digital SLR camera.

⭐Great book and in great condition for being used. I look forward to getting into it and learning about my camera. Just by scanning through the pages, it looks like it will be easy to figure out. THere are step by step instructions as well as awesome photos! I’ve been looking for a book like this for ages because I really am a “dummy” with my camera.

⭐I also think this was a well written book. Having read David D. Busch’s book on the Canon Rebel XS – which also is an excellent book – I picked up a copy of the XS book for dummies and knew I also wanted this book – of course Amazon was the place to purchase it as it saved me $10 dollars – the book by Busch – was a excellent book on all the features of the Canon Rebel XS – but really did not go into a lot of sample photographs and the setting to be used in certain aspects of taking those photographs. “The Canon EOS Rebel XS/1000D for Dummies”,(CFD)- shows many setting for different aspects of photography – From Busch’s’ book I learned how to operate the Canon Rebel XS – from the CFD I learned how to take photographs and the settings (Shutter speed, aperture, ISO, exposure, and depth of field understanding) needed to take great photographs. I use the term photographs instead of pictures – because to me – anyone can take a picture – but to take a photograph – you must have the understanding of the camera/lens/ and ability to compose what your looking at – to bring it to life – in a photograph. The Canon EOS Rebel XS/1000D for Dummies – did exactly that. Made me understand – therefore – I fully recommend the book and do not let the dummy part mislead you – there is a lot to learn from this book.

⭐The book is in color which I like over another book I previously purchased that was smaller and in black and white. I like the format in general of the Dummie series of books as they are more detailed than other books on the same subject and yet at the same time easy to read for a beginner. For anyone that does not like to read a manual and wants to get an answer quickly this is the book. I read this book in spot style and I am surprised how much I did not know about my camera that the book explained. I carry this book with me in the field now so I can have a quick answer to how my camera needs to be set up for that perfect shot.

⭐Like every book in the series, the Canon EOS Rebel XS For Dummies book is easy to read/use, even if you know nothing of digital cameras at all! If you do know a bit, there are certainly sections to skip, but they’re pretty clearly labeled. I was nervous when I ordered it because I didn’t know what the “1000D” referred to and thought it was a feature my camera didn’t come with – it’s just a name for the same product. Once I conquered the title, I found the camera followed pretty easily afterwards. haha. Good book with great tips for an SLR beginner!

⭐I am a great believer in the KISS principle. When starting something new, in this case digital photography, it can be frustrating to work through menus and settings and applications etc. To be fair I am a very impatient sod, ask my wife. But I think that these cameras are over complicated. The manufacturer makes a list of what a lot of people desire in a camera and adds them all. Whereas people like me, and I am sure there are others, I couldn’t be ‘The Only One’ could I? I have used a 35 mm SLR for many years. I learned how to read and bracket if necessary with a needle point system. I just adjusted the shutter speed or the f stop to the setting I required then took the photo. But with all the possibilities in these cameras it can be hard work wading your way through the various settings and applications. The trick is, I have decided, to reset the menu to manual and only shoot in RAW. Ignore the histograms and other shooting formats. Then download the pictures to your computer and adjust as necessary.Otherwise just shoot in jpeg and set to auto. This book helps you do that! Nice pictures as well.

⭐My dad knows a lot about photography, but was slow to update to a digital camera. He is a reader, and had gone through the Canon Rebel manual cover to cover by the time I bought him this book. He found the Dummies book much more clear and easy to follow than the manual, even after he had played with the camera for a week or two. This book comes with a strong recommendation — from my dad.

⭐I self taught myself the basics of photography with the help of this book. I had tried online resources and was left confused and frustrated. Tried this book, worked through it a few chapters a night, and it “clicked” for me and helped me to understand the basics of manual photography. Lots of helpful and colorful photos and diagrams to help visually learn. Easy to read, well paced- overall a great book and would highly recommend as a BEGINNER photographer book!

⭐I purchased the Canon EOS 1000D in Nov 2009 to migrate from taking simple pictures with a standard digital camera. I want to become a serious photographer, so I bought this book to improve my knowledge of the basic and creative functions of the camera. I found this book to be detailed enough and useful in what I expected. This book is purely aimed at Canon 1000D. The manufacturer’s manual is very basic, so this book gives simple explanations and illustrations to those new to this Camera. Those with a solid background in digital photography will not find this book very useful. It simply will not teach anything new to exprienced photographers. To newcomers, my advice is that take your time to go through the book with your camera (if you have bought it already) beside you. Its certainly not for one weekend reading. There are many other books and web sites which can give you various tips into taking amazing pictures with this camera. As I said, this book is just an intro to newbies and I would recommend it.

⭐This book is just the job for some one of my ability I have been taking pictures for many years now. With the advent of DSLR this has changed many factors of the game so much detail on those systems too much for most people to take in . That’s where this book takes over very well laid out easy to understand detail. I suppose now im taking proper pictures. I also got one for a family member too

⭐Nice and simple to read and interesting made learning fun and easy to follow

⭐If you can get past the dubious American attempt at humour which all Dummies books seem to want to do the content of the book is good, well laid out and informative for a newcomer like me. By its nature it is a large book and very heavy so difficult to take with you on photographic expeditions for reference. Overall worth the money.

⭐Truly easy to follow. A boon.
