Description

Grounded in the work of Henri Poincare, R. Thom and others, catastrophe theory attempts to study how the qualitative nature of the solutions of equations depends on the parameters that appear in the equations. This advanced-level treatment describes the mathematics of catastrophe theory and its applications to problems in mathematics, physics, chemistry and the engineering disciplines. 1981 edition. References. Includes 28 tables and 397 black-and-white illustrations.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐Catastrophe theory enjoyed a brief and tumultuous period of fame during the seventies. The theory was later disregarded due to exaggerated claims on what it could be applied for. However, as a mathematical formalism to study discontinuous changes of continuous functions, catastrophe theory still has the potential of giving insights into physical problems. This book is an excellent an affordable account of catastrophe theory, with good examples and clear exposition. It is also more recent than Poston & Stewart’s and is still in print by Dover. I warmly recommend it.

⭐Libro in perfetto stato, è di insostituibile valore per avere un quadro esatto e chiaro delle applicazioni che la teoria elaborata da Rene Thom e poi approfondita da altri ha nei vari rami delle scienze.
