Description

Scheck’s successful textbook presents a comprehensive treatment, ideally suited for a one-semester course. The textbook describes Maxwell’s equations first in their integral, directly testable form, then moves on to their local formulation. The first two chapters cover all essential properties of Maxwell’s equations, including their symmetries and their covariance in a modern notation. Chapter 3 is devoted to Maxwell’s theory as a classical field theory and to solutions of the wave equation. Chapter 4 deals with important applications of Maxwell’s theory. It includes topical subjects such as metamaterials with negative refraction index and solutions of Helmholtz’ equation in paraxial approximation relevant for the description of laser beams. Chapter 5 describes non-Abelian gauge theories from a classical, geometric point of view, in analogy to Maxwell’s theory as a prototype, and culminates in an application to the U(2) theory relevant for electroweak interactions. The last chapter 6 gives a concise summary of semi-Riemannian geometry as the framework for the classical field theory of gravitation. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the Schwarzschild solution of Einstein’s equations and the classical tests of general relativity. The new concept of this edition presents the content divided into two tracks: the fast track for master’s students, providing the essentials, and the intensive track for all wanting to get in depth knowledge of the field. Cleary labeled material and sections guide students through the preferred level of treatment. Numerous problems and worked examples will provide successful access to Classical Field Theory.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐Excellent for EM, Relativity, and Field theory. Whish I had it long ago. It is the bridge between modern approaches and old classics like Landau. Scheck goes out of his way to make everything clear and state what his expectations are from the reader right from the start; everything else is derived thoroughly and explained. The book is oriented to preparing students for the modern mathematical language of forms that makes concepts easier to calculate and remember, albeit at the cost of some abstraction. Scheck also writes well, and he anticipates the reader’s doubts every time.

⭐The book is excellent, but the kindle version is not so good. I bought the kindle version from Amazon and compared it to the PDF and epub version from Springer verlag. Equation 166c in the PDF versions is D = epsilon E. In the epub and kindle versions it is in indecipherable mess. Unfortunately the Amazon search inside function display the pdf version. Amazon should only sell the PDF versions of books. The others are often ugly and useless.

⭐The book is ratherexpensive if new.I got this used one ata reasonable price.

⭐Florian Scheck’s Theoretische Physik series is the most modern and rigorous textbooks among German theoretical physics books for high level undergraduates and graduate students. In regard to the use of modern mathematical language, some books by Norbert Straumann are only comparable to these although Straumann has only a few subjects (mechanics, thermodynamics, quantum mechanics and his specialty relativity). Students not familiar to modern mathematical language may find Scheck difficult to follow. This Classical Field Theory actually covers electrodynamics and briefly touches gauge theory and general relativity. Other books of similar titles usually skip classical electrodynamics and mostly cover advanced topics. Thus, this book should be considered rather as an E & M book as Landau & Lifshitz’s Classical Theory of Fields. It is highly recommendable to mathematically oriented students.
