User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐This book was for a graduate level class I took last semester (Fall 2017). The international edition was sturdy enough to last the entire semester with the cover only slightly bent. I did not carry it back and forth to class much but the bends were likely from there. The international edition I got I ordered from the Amazon seller BestStore4Books. Considering it is far cheaper than the American edition, I would highly recommend purchasing the international edition. Also, if you Google the book you can likely find a PDF copy as a backup should something happen to the international edition. It is nice to have a physical copy, though, especially to do problems since they often require flipping through the book for information and formulas, and it is difficult to flip around in a book using a PDF copy. However, this international edition was sturdy enough to last the entire semester for me and it will likely be on my bookshelves well into the future, and considering it was much cheaper I would recommend it. Also, to add further protection to soft cover books, you can cover them with clear contact paper which gives added protection similar to the protection on many soft cover books one finds at libraries, so if you are particularly worried about damaging the book you can always add the contact paper. As far as the actual content in the book, I found the text to be rather dry but useful to learn from regardless. It also would be nice to have more problems in the book. Each chapter seemed to cover a lot of material and each of the topics typically seemed to have maybe only one or two problems. The course I took covered Lagrangian and Hamiltonian mechanics and also covered Poisson brackets and the Hamilton-Jacobi formulation. I found the book Introductory Classical Mechanics by David Morin to be useful and have many problems with detailed solutions for it. It was especially useful for the Lagrangian part of the course. I would recommend buying that book and/or getting a PDF copy of it to supplement this textbook.
⭐The text fades at the outer and bottom page borders on a couple pages. Another page has smudges through the text. Price seems excessive considering the print quality. Otherwise, the text is in good condition and the book is the known gold standard for textbooks in Classical Mechanics.
⭐The headline is the message.
⭐Firstly, I took into account CONTENT and QUALITY of this edition in my review. Content: 4 stars. Quality of the edition: zero stars (worse than “I hate it”), giving an average of two stars. I also owe the magnificent second edition by Addison-Wesley, of a great work by Goldstein.ABOUT CONTENT: compared to the second edition, the third edition added about one section per chapter, but not all chapters were added sections. Chapter seven on the special theory of relativity has the most sections added to it (about three). Several appendices of the second edition disappeared in the third edition and it is not clear to me if they were added to the main body of the book. The third edition has a new chapter titled “Classical Chaos,” chapter eleven, which could have been better. Chapter eleven, I think, could have done a better job motivating and exploiting Poincaré maps, or first-return maps. Instead, the chapter draws too much attention to the logistic map, which makes that part of the book seem detached from the rest of the book (which is on Mechanics, therefore, differential equations -not maps). Also, the contents of chapter eleven are better presented in other books, such as “Chaos” by Alliwood, Sauer and Yorke, or “Copying with chaos” by Ott, Sauer and Yorke. Interested buyers can see the contents of both books themselves in Amazon.ABOUT EDITION: International Indian editions are H-O-R-R-I-B-L-E, they do a disservice to the works they intend to reproduce with their see-through, wrinkled paper with sloppily framed text in varying hues of gray. A student interested in this classic textbook may try to buy a used (so you can save a bit) hardcover third edition from a reputable seller. But please, and especially if you are a Physics or Mathematics major, PLEASE, DO NOT BUY INTERNATIONAL INDIAN EDITIONS of ANY of your textbooks. They are AWFUL. To top all that, this international Indian edition has the following legend:”The publishers would like to thank […] for his valuable suggestions and inputs in enhancing the content of this book to suit the requirements of Indian and other Asian universities.”I really disliked seeing the above. Does that mean that this edition does not have the same content as the American edition? I want to buy a book as the authors intended it to be, not as some bureaucrat thought that it should be. Unfortunately, when you click on “see inside” in the American edition of the book, it will show the contents of the infamous international edition. ⭐The red triangle in the corner states that this edition is not for distribution outside of India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Pakistan, or Sri Lanka. The book came in good condition and obviously shipped out of India, but I’m not sure of the legality of owning this book in the United States… any insight would be appreciated.
⭐I really needed this book to arrive in less than a week since my classes had already started. I contacted the seller and they were extremely nice with my request. Although I was supposed to get the book in twenty days they shipped it and sent it in less than a week (3 days) which awed me. Regarding the item itself the cover is nice and good quality and the only trade off is the quality of the paper used; its too thin and the other side of the paper is slightly visible (not a big deal maybe but it makes reading a bit difficult for me).
⭐Es el clásico texto para estudiar temas avanzados de la mecánica clásica y si generalización como es la mecánica según Lagrange y la teoría de Hamiltom
⭐
⭐I think this book is great! The explanations are really clear. The Rigid Body sections in this book are very detailed! But as with any book, it is better to accompany with a different book to complement explanations (I use it along with Marion and Thornton’s book).
⭐This is a great book for learning mathematical, classical mechanics. I’ve been using it to help me design a 3D physics simulation program for rigid body dynamics and it has answered all of my questions.I’ve also used Landau – Mechanics: Volume 1, which I found to be quite dense and fast paced. Landau’s explanations seem well suited to an abstract physicist, less to a pragmatic mechanist who just wan’t to get things moving! This book (Goldstien’s) goes into plenty of detail and often gives several different explanations for the results discussed.I also like the numerous examples where the maths is tied in to some excellent non-trivial practical examples, like the procession of the Earth about its symmetrical axis. This grounds the maths nicely with proper physics.
⭐PearsonIN (the publisher) has brought down the standards to the extent where several pages in between chapters are missing (no print) and the paper quality is worse than a C-grade local newspaper. Photocopies usually have a better quality than this print. I have used several Indian Paperback editions from various publishers (Cambridge India, Wiley etc.), but PearsonIN sets the quality bar lower than no other. PearsonIN should apologize for such business malpractice. I will never purchase anything from PearsonIN anymore. Disappointed.
⭐A clear exposition of advanced methods of dealing with problems in mechanics is given.
⭐Goooooood!!
⭐all well done
