Description
Widely used in advanced composition and writing courses, Classical Rhetoric for the Modern Student discusses the three vital components of classical rhetoric–argument, arrangement, and style–bringing these elements to life and demonstrating their effective use in yesterday’s and today’swriting. Presenting its subject in five parts, the text provides grounding in the elements and applications of classical rhetoric; the strategies and tactics of argumentation; the effective presentation and organization of discourses; the development of power, grace, and felicity in expression; andthe history of rhetorical principles. Numerous examples of classic and contemporary rhetoric, from paragraphs to complete essays, appear throughout the book, many followed by detailed analyses. The fourth edition of Classical Rhetoric for the Modern Student features a new section on the Progymnasmata (classical composition exercises), a new analysis of a color advertisement in the Introduction, an updated survey of the history of rhetoric, and an updated section on “External Aids toInvention.”

⭐I hesitated purchasing this resource after reading a few reviews reporting significant grammatical errors in the text. Of course, such errors would bring into question the quality of the information in a book presenting itself as a textbook for modern students of Rhetoric. However, I was so in need of a textbook that explains the basics of classical rhetoric, and other resources I had purchased just didn’t meet my needs. I had no choice but to try this textbook, despite my initial inertia.I am glad I followed my gut feelings to be adventurous. This is my second cover-to-reading through this book, and my understanding of classical rhetoric is where I wanted it to be— sound, grounded and usable! In hindsight, I wished I had purchased this resource as my first book to understand Rhetoric; I certainly would have spared myself the headaches and grief of trying to grasp the basics of rhetoric from the resources I had purchased earlier.Yes, there were a few typos in the text, but the quality of the information with it’s simple and clear style rendered these deficiencies of no consequence to me. This book contains what I was hoping it would— and it exceeded my expectations. It is money well spent for me!
⭐Bought this to learn about rhetoric, not for a class. It is a good overview of rhetoric, although I would recommend starting with Thank You For Arguing, which is a more enjoyable and lucid read. For a book on rhetoric the writing is quite taxing and could have benefitted from a good editor. There are also typos throughout, which was a disappointment. Still, it is a great reference that includes some excellent examples of rhetoric. Unfortunately, it reads like the textbook that it is.
⭐One of the few books that have improved my writing since high school. (Most just regurgitate the same basic information…) This book is very comprehensive in its inclusion of classical logical and rhetorical concepts and isn’t as dry as it could easily be. It’s a great reference. Worth the money.
⭐Wow, this is an incredible book. It covers the whole scheme of things involving writing, from basic logic lessons to exercises for analyzing great prose masters. Indispensable.
⭐Knowledge of Rhetoric improves our daily encounters with neighbors. Improves our self awareness. It makes us better people.I recommend it as a supplement to educating our children. Don’t rely on the modern teaching all by itself.
⭐How very strange, even abominable, that many people stumble and mumble in their attempts to bring the art of effective or persuasive speaking or writing to a pleasant and effective completion, for their intended audience and for themselves. This book is the antidote and cure for such stumbling and mumbling because it sets forth in logical order, with clear and succinct explanation and examples, how one might best organize and convey whatever it is to be written or orally presented. The reader should be aware of the strong requirement of being an earnest and serious student of language and of writing… prior to setting forth upon the study of this book; however, the reader and student who perseveres in earnest in this pursuit should discover the gold and treasure hidden within their writing and speech… within their ideation.
⭐One of the most useful textbooks I’ve ever purchased. I’ll be referring to this throughout my career.
⭐Make this your best friend for 1302 class.
⭐I first encountered “Classical Rhetoric for the Modern Student” in the 1970s. The mix of the historical, theoretical, and applied dazzled me then, and remains with me to this day. I am forever learning from this work. Each new edition builds on the last and imparts a level of guidance and wisdom about the foremost tool for work and life: language and its uses. A priceless book.
⭐A magnificent book to enrich your speeches
⭐I loved this book and it elevated my writing.
