User’s Reviews
Editorial Reviews: Review `’it was a brilliant idea to produce the narrative poems and sonnets as a single edition….[Burrow’s] book-length introduction [is] the best study there is of Shakespeare as a poet.’ ‘if the bookshelf had room for only one edition of Shakespeare’s poems, Burrow’s would be the one” Stephen Orgel, London Review of Books`’it is a superb edition, beautifully conceived, learned, intelligent, generous, judicious; but most impressive in the way it locates Shakespeare’s poems in relation to each other and to his career.’ ‘ Stephen Orgel`’lucid, acute, to the point, and often amusing . . . a distinguished addition to a distinguished series.” Henry Woudhuysen, Times Literary Supplement`’Colin Burrow’s good sense, tact and balance as an editor are deeply impressive.” Henry Woudhuysen, Times Literary Supplement`the best edition of these (mostly) cracking poems’ Evening Standard About the Author William Shakespeare (1564-1616) was an English poet and playwright widely regarded as the greatest writer of the English language, as well as one of the greatest in Western literature, and the world’s pre-eminent dramatist.
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐This is a good scholarly edition and would probably be very useful for anyone interested in writing on Shakespeare or who is doing research on him. But for someone like me, who just wanted to read the poems, the massive introduction (over a hundred pages) and the huge number of footnotes (they take up over half the page, typically) produces a bulky volume that makes reading less enjoyable. This is a thorough edition, so at least you get all of Shakespeare’s non-dramatic poems, and I have not (so far) found a comparable edition that includes his narrative poems (editions of his sonnets are plentiful, but it’s harder to find print versions of Venus and Adonis and Lucrece).Thorough edition, though it makes reading a bit of a chore. I’d rather use a slimmer, more compact edition, if I could find one.
⭐The reason I am giving three stars is due to the small print. It is heavily footnoted with all kind of scholarly and knowledgable information, I could read none of it. I recommend that you get the hardcover only, of this or and Oxford text, they are scholarly works jam packed with info. Every literary student or any lover of Shakespeare should have it, but not in the paperback. Shakespeare Rocks!
⭐AOK. Got what I wanted.
⭐Shakespeare is more popular for his plays, but I actually really prefer his poems. This is a great book for anyone interested in poetry or Shakespeare. It does indeed have any sonnet or poem he has written, but it’s a pretty small collection none the less. It’s of great quality for the price. I love this edition. Highly recommended.
⭐This was a gift to our son. He can’t say enough about the collection in this book! He loves it!!!
⭐I have yet to read through the entire book but from what I have read Shakespeare had a brilliant mind. I love his work. This book is just his sonnets and poems no plays here. If you have any desire to read or start reading Shakespeare this is the book to do it in. Its very relaxing. And it gives you alot to think about.
⭐Next time I want bigger print. I think I am going to go hunt for a beautiful looking edition big pages, great paper, and the words as always, phenomenal.
⭐Many Informative foot notes.
⭐Part of the Oxford Complete Shakespeare series, this contains all the poems, both the lyrics and the narrative poems. The poems are in modern spelling, the text has been collated from the most authoritative sources, and the editor, Colin Burrow, has written detailed introductions that are both scholarly and accessible. The commentary and glossary is either on the page or facing so students don’t need to keep flicking to the back, and the sonnets are given a page each so there is plenty of room for our own annotations.Perhaps best of all, this is really well-produced on thick white paper and with a proper sewn binding that won’t fall apart with too much use. So whether you’re a student at any level, or a general reader, this is an beautiful and functional edition of all Shakespeare’s poems.
⭐This is really a nonsense purchase – and just goes to show that I should have checked to see how many pages this book consisted of and what was inside – because although the title says Nonsense songs stories botany and alphabets there is nothing in this book apart form eleven pages of what seem to be photocopied line drawings – a total scam
⭐This is a very comprehensive book on the sonnets and poetry of Shakespeare. A lot of narrative is included as well. A thick paperback book, which I am sure you will use a great deal now and in the future.
⭐After reading and annotating the introduction (and therefore don’t want to return it) I got to the end of Venus and Adonis and the last few hundred lines are missing. In fact the book jumps from page 230 to 279! Very frustrating as needed for a seminar this week.
⭐Extensive and useful annotations. The only problem i have with the book is the small font.
