Description

This basic book on functions of a complex variable represents the irreducible minimum of what every scientist and engineer should know about this important subject. From a preliminary discussion of complex numbers and functions to key topics such as the Cauchy theory, power series, and residues, distinguished mathematical writer Richard Silverman presents the fundamentals of complex analysis in a concise manner designed not to overwhelm the beginner. The author’s lively style and simplicity of approach enable the reader to grasp essential topics without being distracted by secondary issues.Contents include: Complex Numbers; Some Special Mapping; Limits in the Complex Plane; Multiple-Valued Functions’ Complex Functions; Taylor Series; Differentiation in the Complex Plane; Laurent Series; Integration in the Complex Plane; Applications of Residues; Complex Series; Mapping of Polygonal Domains; Power Series; and Some Physical Applications.Abundant exercise material and examples, as well as section-by-section comments at the end of each chapter make this book especially valuable to students and anyone encountering complex analysis for the first time.

User’s Reviews

Editorial Reviews: About the Author Richard A. Silverman: Dover’s Trusted Advisor Richard Silverman was the primary reviewer of our mathematics books for well over 25 years starting in the 1970s. And, as one of the preeminent translators of scientific Russian, his work also appears in our catalog in the form of his translations of essential works by many of the greatest names in Russian mathematics and physics of the twentieth century. These titles include (but are by no means limited to): Special Functions and Their Applications (Lebedev); Methods of Quantum Field Theory in Statistical Physics (Abrikosov, et al); An Introduction to the Theory of Linear Spaces, Linear Algebra, and Elementary Real and Complex Analysis (all three by Shilov); and many more. During the Silverman years, the Dover math program attained and deepened its reach and depth to a level that would not have been possible without his valuable contributions.

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐This book covers the basics and spends time on rigor… However, this book should not be used outside of a classroom. It has a noticeable and gaping lack of examples and worked problems making many of the exercises and concepts extraordinarily difficult to comprehend. Much material is found in exercise form (such as Abel’s theorem) making it very difficult to learn without using a supplementary source. The exercises are proof heavy, and omit application and computation until the later chapters. It is a small book and it spends very little time discussing important concepts which leaves it up to the reader to interpret abstract definitions and theorems.Such an important subject should not be treated with such minimalism. Much of these concepts are used frequently in other fields of math and physics and it is imperative that students obtain a rock-solid understanding of the material. If you are a student considering this book for independent or supplementary study, then find a different book. If you are a student and this book is required material, then I hope your lecturer knows the material well. If you are teaching, perhaps a more recent book would be more appropriate.

⭐I got this book because it was one of the recommended books to have on Complex analysis. Unfortunately when I received it and attempted to open the book, if you can imagine my surprise, the printed text was bound in reverse. That is, the front started with the catalog of Dover books, Index, …etc. and the back of the book was where the Contents, Chapter 1, … etc. were. It was like reading in an Arabic style (Right to left). I was very disappointed.

⭐After I received this book and browsed through the pages I fell in love with this book. The book is handy and well organized.

⭐Easy to understand

⭐This is a nice supplement to any student studying complex analysis. I ordered this along with the Introductory Complex Analysis book in the series. Shipment was quick and the books were reasonably priced.

⭐Great Product!! Great Service!!

⭐Buyer Beware! The book I have is missing the first chapter (it starts on chapter 2). Consult w/ seller to make sure book has first chapter.

⭐One of the best of Dover. Might be a litlebit advanced though, if you are a real beginner.

⭐A concise beginners book for studying the large field of complex analysis.

⭐good
