Description

This book presents methods for the computational solution of some important problems of linear algebra: linear systems, linear least squares problems, eigenvalue problems, and linear programming problems. The book also includes a chapter on the fast Fourier transform and a very practical introduction to the solution of linear algebra problems on modern supercomputers. The book contains the relevant theory for most of the methods employed. It also emphasizes the practical aspects involved in implementing the methods. Students using this book will actually see and write programs for solving linear algebraic problems. Highly readable FORTRAN and MATLAB codes are presented which solve all of the main problems studied.

User’s Reviews

Editorial Reviews: Review “This robust text is well worth an evaluation for anyone interested in teaching such topics. If this book or a subset of its content were used, students would undoubtedly benefit from the tutelage it offers.” (SIAM Review, Vol 50, Issue 4, 2008) “The author’s presentation in excellent, providing motivation to the student throughout…an excellent, extremely readable introduction to computational linear algebra…” (MAA Reviews, December 28, 2005) From the Back Cover This book presents methods for the computational solution of some important problems of linear algebra: linear systems, linear least squares problems, eigenvalue problems, and linear programming problems. Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐The flow of computer material on linear methods is superb yes I liked it

⭐I’m pleased to work over this book and found many nice applications that any computational scientist must know.It is similar to see the nature of black boxes that are already used, e.g. eigenvalue problem with LAPACK.

⭐The book is very readable. Unlike many other science textbooks with a bunch of examples and thereoms and bizarre way of organizing sentences, (You know sometimes, science scholars may have terrible language organizing and writting skills, making their books uneasy to be interpreted by ordinary humans), this book is more like a script for lectures. This mean we do not highly dependent on the teacher to explain those contents, since they are already explained more than detailed. So this is actually a very good book for self studying. Another feature of This book is that it contains less examples than other textbooks, theories are explained more by paragraphs of human language than by examples with mathematical terms. This is helpful for deeply understanding those concepts.
