Description

Duiker’s comprehensive, balanced history of the world in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries provides you with context for interpreting the events that you hear about in the news each day. You’ll view history from the broader global perspective, while at the same time gaining insight into the distinct character of individual civilizations and regions. To ensure that you’ll have a well-rounded understanding of the most decisive moments in recent times, Duiker integrates political, economic, social, and cultural history into a smoothly written narrative. The Fifth Edition text includes a special insert that guides you in using the text’s many detailed maps and helps you learn how to make important connections between geography and the turn of historic events. Additional tools include timelines that highlight and contrast different cultures and nations–giving you an “at-a-glance,” holistic perspective on eras and their defining events; photos from William Duiker’s own collection for a closer, more personal look at the world we live in; and primary-source documents that illustrate and clarify key points.

User’s Reviews

Editorial Reviews: About the Author William J. Duiker is liberal arts Professor Emeritus of East Asian studies at The Pennsylvania State University. A former U.S. diplomat with service in Taiwan, South Vietnam, and Washington, D.C., he received his doctorate in Far Eastern history from Georgetown University. At Penn State, he has written extensively on the history of Vietnam and modern China, including the highly acclaimed COMMUNIST ROAD TO POWER IN VIETNAM (revised edition, Westview Press, 1996), which was selected for a Choice Outstanding Academic Book Award in 1982?1983 and 1996?1997. Other books are CHINA AND VIETNAM: THE ROOTS OF CONFLICT (Berkeley, 1987), U.S. CONTAINMENT POLICY AND THE CONFLICT IN INDOCHINA (Stanford, 1995), SACRED WAR: NATIONALISM AND REVOLUTION IN A DIVIDED VIETNAM (McGraw-Hill, 1995), and HO CHI MINH (Hyperion, 2000), which was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in 2001. While his research specialization is in the field of nationalism and Asian revolutions, his intellectual interests are considerably more diverse. He has traveled widely and has taught courses on the history of communism and non-Western civilizations at Penn State, where he was awarded a Faculty Scholar Medal for Outstanding Achievement in the spring of 1996. In 2002 the College of Liberal Arts honored him with an Emeritus Distinction Award.

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐I rented the Kindle version of this book as it was far cheaper than buying it. I have to say I’m fairly disappointed. As a fairly pricey book, I expected that the digitalization would have been done well. For one thing, there is no table of contents, at least not an interactive one. This is a major setback for a textbook, where you constantly need to be going back and forth between chapters and sub-sections. Another complaint is that material is left out. Some pages simply have the words “Text not available due to copyright restrictions.” If the publishers have authorized the sale of a digital version of their book, they should have the rights to their own material. Also, not being able to change the text size is fairly inconvenient.

⭐Good information, but overall it is too generalized for reading outside of a college class that requires it. I was hoping to learn about recent history in the world, instead it just rehashed all the stuff most people already know about the Cold War through the 1990s. There are better books on this subject.

⭐I found this book to be an easy to read history book that seemed to be pretty accurate in most accounts. It is a good source of general knowledge, but does not go really deep into the subjects covered.

⭐Good condition though it has been used and re-used. Great source of information. This book served me very well (no highlights or writing in the book).

⭐I bought this book for a class, and it is well-written. I learned quite a bit from this book (and I hate history).Glad to have looked through this book.

⭐Although this book is used, it is in a really good condition. Some highlighting and writing throughout the book but it is still usable.

⭐This book contains a great wealth of knowledge regarding the time from the Enlightenment period in Europe until now; however, the author comes off in many cases as being biased regarding the information in the book.

⭐The kindle version of this book is an affront to eTextbooks everywhere. It is a pathetic DRM-laden glorified PDF. No text scaling is available. The index is incomplete and the entire textbook is barely searchable. Many portions of the book are “not available due to copyright restrictions.” since the price and electronic resource is set and distributed by the publisher, they should hold all required rights for publication. I will be seeking a refund and will have to purchase a dead-tree version at three times the eBook price.
