Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐Being a recently diagnosed diabetic, I didn’t know much about diabetes. I had trouble getting my blood glucose numbers and my A1C down to an acceptable level. This book helped me a lot in understanding diabetes and how to live with it. It is well written and easy to understand. It discusses diets, exercise, blood glucose meters, different types of diabetic medications, insulin and much, much more. My blood glucose is now down where it should be, and I just found out my A1C has dropped down to 6.5 (Yeah!). I would highly recommend this book for all new diabetics.

⭐OK. Hubby’s just been diagosed with type II diabetes. Go the to library and get a million confusing books. I don’t have time for this. No, wait, there’s GOT to be a “Dummies” book on this subject. Amazon.com – “Diabetes for Dummies” – BINGO! Aaaahhhh, all the information I need in an easy-to-understand format. The only problem we found in this this book is that the calculation for body mass index (BMI) was a bit confusing, and some of the websites have changed, but the rest of the book was EXTREMELY helpful and presented in a non-threatening way.Knowledge is power and banishes fear. This book helped save my sanity. Also, when I had a question, I sent an e-mail and got a prompt response from Dr. Rubin himself!

⭐This review only applies to the Kindle version of the book. It is book which is full of very useful information. However, the Kindle version is deeply flawed.1. There are many tables of information in the book. They are almost useless on the Kindle. The tables come out as screen after screen of columns of numbers. The Kindle conversion was very poorly done.2. Several places in the Kindle version there are whole paragraphs of text formatting instructions. Again, the conversion to Kindle was done sloppily.I plan to buy the print version of the book to be able to use it to control my diabetes. The book has the best information I have seen on how diabetes affects other parts of the body. This is important to me since I already have kidney damage.

⭐We just found out that my husband was diabetic. He was horrified. I prefer to research as much as possible to increase my knowledge, hopefully, providing better results. This book has great information. That would explain why the American Diabetic Organization recommended it. It provided information for us to cope and manage his health. I also purchased Diabetes 911…a great addition. Between the two, a couple pills and some insulin, we have dropped his glucose count by more than 350 in just 30 days. It is very likely that with just 2 little pills and watching his food choices, no insulin will be required. Bonus…he probably will be able to quit taking his high blood pressure medicine as well.

⭐VERY helpful! Wish my doctor had told me this stuff years ago, especially the chapter on how the various pills work; I might have held off having to go on insulin longer. This book is good for newly diagnosed and for long-time diabetics both–anyone who wants to understand and take control of their diabetes. I lend this book to friends who have just been diagnosed as the most readable intro and orientation I have found.

⭐Not answering the questions I have. I have not looked at it after I browsed it the first time.

⭐I wish it had more information regarding lists of foods to eat, avoid, etc. Some of the info is not really for “Dummies” and is technical. Overall, it is okay but I was a bit disappointed I have several of the “Dummies” Series and this was not as good as I had hoped.

⭐This book is very insightful whether you are a newly diagnosed diabetic, have had it for a long time, are caring for someone with it or are just interested in eating healthier. It is definitely written with the reader in mind – not written in non-understandable medical language. And, the author regularly throws humor in , which makes it a great read.

⭐This is one of the better books I have read since getting my shock news that I am now a Type II Diabetic. I went on a book binge and got myself a fair number of books from Amazon and some of them I just wish that I didn’t. Many books were over complicated for the average person trying to understand this complex and life threatening condition not to mention how many of them contradict each other in relation to what you can/can’t eat on a diabetes friendly diet. Have some carbs, you need carbs, eat no carbs. What the?Enter Diabetes for Dummies. Not really for Dummies but certainly for the person who wants clearly presented information that is easy to read, understand and put into practice. The book is a complete read, extensive in it’s information right from how you can expect to feel after diagnosis (like you have been given a life sentence and the grieving process often begins for many) to each medical condition that can happen because of diabetes and how to avoid anything nasty happening to you. I took away so much from this book that I put into practice straight away.It speaks to you in a friendly way and is nicely broken into specific chapters then broken down into smaller sections, you can either flick to topics of interest first or read the book through or like me read it and dip in over a few days as it’s a lot to take in. It’s a book I would use as a reference book for life and would lend and recommend to any friend or family wanted to understand what I am dealing with. I highly recommend this for anyone with or loving someone with diabetes type I or type II.Because of this book I am now aware of the importance of foot care for example, advice given like never to go barefoot, to wear slippers to avoid damaging a toe or standing on something that cuts or wounds your feet. I know a Podiatrist and Chiropodist are my best friends for life and I need to see them often. I need to check my feet daily for any open wounds, sores, callouses or very dry skin and see my GP or specialist if anything untoward is found. I ended up buying a special intensive foam diabetes foot cream because of this book which has worked wonder in making my feet lovely and smooth and creates a barrier for the future. Why do you need to care for your feet so much? Well to be frank, and it talks about this – if you get an infected sore or cut and it does not heal (as diabetes slows the healing process) you may end up with a foot or leg amputation. They happen. Getting your blood sugars under control is key of course to help this scenario not happen. It is shocking taking in a lot of the health crisis and dangers but balances it with the positives of eating healthy, exercising and doing what you can to start to bring blood sugars down so the risk diminishes. The chapter on medication and how it works helped me a lot too, I was going to refuse the medication offered but realised with such high readings I needed to not be silly and put myself at risk.A very well rounded book, all you need in the one book. If you only buy one book on diabetes, make it this one. Five stars from me.

⭐My partner was recently diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes and we needed to educate ourselves — quickly — about how to cope with the condition. This is an excellent, easy to read guide, which has proved to be extremely useful for us. It is written by medical professionals but is in plain, accessible English which means you can answer a query quickly, and come back for more in-depth information later. It covers both Type 1 and 2, and offers an overall guide to medication, exercise, diet and how to cope with it all. There are also plenty of case studies which are based on real people, so you relate to the information and how it is effective in a practical situation. It is more detailed and informative than the Diabetes UK website, and much more balanced than the more personal guidebooks which we have also seen. The information is broken up into useful chapters and bite-size chunks. Nothing difficult to handle, and the index makes finding a particular subject (testing glucose levels / hypoglcaemia / GI levels / complications / whatever) very easy.As well as being useful for actual diabetic patients, this book is also brilliant for the family. It explains mood swings and depression, and how to help the person who is suffering. It’s a book about how to live well despite diabetes — and has proved to be extremely useful, eductional, practical and uplifting. It is only marked down by one star because the information stops too soon for us — we could have done with more detailed medical chapters explaining the how and why of things. Our probliem is now that there’s very little to bridge the gap between basic guides for the layman and full-blown medical textbooks!

⭐I was newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes about 4 weeks go. I was put on the maximum dose of Metformin and Gliclazide and my blood sugar decreased from 17 to 6 within two weeks. The book does not spell out the target blood sugar, it is 5-7 before meal and <10 after meal (this info I found in my glucose meter instructions). The dietary advice is weak; it should give more info on dietary advice including more on the glycaemia index (GI), my dietician said to limit the amount of carbs I eat, this advice is not found. In my first few days at home I used pulses (mainly beans) for my carbs, it seemed to work (blood sugar dropped from 17 to 10 in three days). There is a lot of info in the book for the newly diagnosed diabetic, but I did not find it that helpful (at the time), but better than nothing. ⭐Bought this as a good reference book between being diagnosed T2 and getting to see the dietician for that 2 hour meeting, very good book, I am always in it looking something up, easy to understand. ⭐Whether you are newly diagnosed or have had diabetes for years, this is a simple to understand book packed with good information. It will explain all those terms and tests your GP uses, and help you understand WHY a good diet and exercise is so important. It also tells you what you can do to improve your lifestyle and avoid long-term complications. There is a whole section on children with diabetes and plenty more. If you just want to dip in, or read it from cover to cover, it is bound to answer many of your questions.
