    User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐As a photographer of over 40 years, I highly recommend this work. For the aspiring portrait photographer, it covers all the bases of classic portraiture, including the how and why of equipment and all-important posing as well as some excellent advice about running your business.I have an extensive photographic library and would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in classic creative portraiture and how to do it right. The material is logically presented in good order and emphasizes “proper” exposure and lighting methods. He covers both natural and artificial light clearly and in depth. Excellent throughout and highly recommended!

⭐I’ve barely scratched the surface on this book but it is quite impressive. I don’t know how they manage to cover the printing costs for the cost I was able to buy it for. This is a very technical book but with many pictures to back up the detail. The author talks for example about several different light sources, and then gives example pictures using each so that you can see what he is talking about. He appears to cover the ‘why’ very well regarding why a technique works the way it does. I very much would recommend the book. Well worth the money. I expect I will seek this author out in the future to see what else he has to offer.

⭐Overall, it is a decent book. I did find it strange that there were no photos identified as being a copyright of his work specifically, and if I were to not have seen his videos I would question the validity of his recommendations. However; I have seen his videos and like his methods which persuaded me to purchase this book.

⭐Thsi is the BEST portrain book I have ever purchsed, and believe me, I have purchsed MANY. Most discuss basic photography concepts with a small chapter on very basic poses. I already know all that stuff. I want more in depth portrait composition, poses, portrait theory, portrait styles…. This book provides all of the above and more. I am so glad I found this one.

⭐I met the author, Steve Sint, a few years ago while attending a photography course he teaches at Maine Media Workshops in Rockport, Maine. There, I found Steve to be jammed-packed with top-notch experience from years in the field, and these are experiences he was more than willing to share. A real-life walking photography “encyclopdeia”, if you will. The kind of person that walks in a room and instantly seems the light, the color temperature, and the exposure needed for perfect images. Steve’s new book, Digital Portrait Photography, is amazing in that it continues in the same vein as the way Steve teaches in person; Steve’s love to teach what could be very technical matters in a step-by-step, easy-to-digest manner. This book is incredibly packed with infinite detail and tips, and will become my ‘bible’ at my portrait studio. I especially like how the book does not just ‘show’ results, it explains HOW they were achieved, and gives newcomers and even advanced photographers a really good start toward become a professional some day like Steve Sint is for us now. When read with care and interest from cover to cover this text will potentially yield the reader the equivalent of an in-depth college course on the subject. The only thing better, I imagine, would be to have Steve teach you personally. The book is highly recommended.

⭐I checked this book out at the library first and thought it was worth investing in. Losts of great information covering a wide range of subjects from posing to camera specs to lighting and re-touching and the like. As I learn more, this book will become less and less helpful but I’m glad I own it nonetheless.

⭐I have numerous portrait photography books and I think this is the best of the bunch. I wanted to learn how to properly use my monolights and my light meter. This author teaches you how to do it all. I have dozens of photography books and I was surprised that a book of this quality was so inexpensive. As the title says, this is exactly the book I was looking for and I finally found it. Highly recommended.

⭐I’m amazed how helpful this book is. As a photographer embarking on starting my own event and portrait business, there are endless tools in here that make me a better photographer. Steve Sint he describes in clear narrative the technical practices that can/should become good habits; using the guidance in this book, I have already gained confidence when shooting people and am better at producing consistent work. Among it’s many strengths, I love that the book begins with a prominent section on the psychology of shooting people – above all else, it’s at the heart of shooting people well. After plodding through throngs of photography books, it’s thrilling to find one that ranks among the best.

⭐If you are looking for a thorough introduction to the whys, wherefores and hows of portrait photography and essential methodology in a studio then look no further. Steve Sint writes well. The book is based on his extensive experience. I read a lot and this is one of the best photography books I have read and will refer to time and time again. In my future reading I shall definitely consider more writing by Steve Sint. Highly recommended!

⭐I am quite new to portraiture and I had only photographed one Time For Print (TFP) session with a model before I read this book. I found the book very useful in many aspects. It goes through lighting, useful gear, tips and tricks, basic model posing, composition etc. There are plenty of example pictures as well as birds eye view illustrations on how and why to set up a shot in a certain way. For anyone who wants to learn about portrait photography I highly recommend this book.

⭐Full of information to improve portrait shots I like the way its laid out in an easy to follow format, well done .

⭐A classic case of never judge a book by its cover, while the image on the front looks reasonably modern it’s not a sign of things to come when you look inside the book. While there are a few Ok images most of which are rather old fashioned and wouldn’t look out of place in the late 80’s to early 90’s.It’s certainly not a book you should purchase if in the UK and are looking for examples of portrait images to take inspiration from as they are classic American-style portrait shots, for example, a 12yr old in front of a fire place wearing a blue shirt, yellow tie, dark blue blazer with gold over-sized buttons and cream coloured trousers! ….picture a young Carlton off the Fresh Prince of Bel-air!On the plus side there are some technical tips on lighting and equipment so I’m sure some will find it useful but (like many photography books) there are no information underneath each image displaying shutter speed, aperture and ISO which is annoying as it is useful to know sometimes. On the whole the pro’s don’t outweigh the cons I’m afraid and this will be sold shortly, probably to someone in the Big Apple where it came from.

⭐Having read another 5 books on photography basics this year, I have to say that is the least inspiring of the lot…The writter strives to persuade the reader of his skills and infinite knowledge which I find annoying and unnecessary. Then, there are areas whose message could be expressed in a single line, but there are numerous paragraphs written. Some parts are just too technical to grasp and the message is completely lost. I just hate having to read a page over and over to get the point. All this results in a reading that lacks pace and forces the reader to scan through pages to find just the info he really needs.Quite a lot of information, but the way it’s written leaves a lot to be desired…
