Description

In his short but authoritative study, Roy Porter assesses the impact of disease on the English before the widespread availability and public provision of medical care, incorporating into the revised edition new perspectives offered by recent research. He examines the medical profession, attitudes to doctors and disease, and the development of state involvement in public health. Drawing together much fragmentary material and providing a detailed bibliography, this book is an important guide to the history of medicine and to English social history.

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐A concise history of medicine and society in England, spanning from 1550-1860. It is extremely readable and a great introduction to the history of English medicine. As a writer, I found Mr. Porter’s book a great source for information. It is scholarly without being dull. After pouring through several academic journals, being left with more questions than answers, I found Mr. Porter’s booklet to exactly what I needed. I highly recommend this little (78 pages) volume to any writer or student of history, or anyone with a general interest in the subject.

⭐This very concise (63 pages of text) book is a nice overview of the history of medicine in early modern England. Porter covers the nature of medical practice, its impact (minimal), public attitudes towards medicine, and public attitudes towards illness and death. Historical trends are covered well. There is an excellent bibliography.

⭐Roy Porter has to be the best acadamic on this subject. He knows his field of expertise well. This is a short but informative piece of work. It mainly highlights aspects of medicine, as the title says, from 1550-1860. This would be a good book to read for interest or prior to study as a way of obtaining an overview. It is also good for revision – short and sweet, easy to read but highlighting important events ie jogging the memory! Further reading and study would be recommended though.
