Description

The Nobel Prize-winning physicist and bestselling author of The First Three Minutes describes the grand quest for a unifying theory of nature–one that can explain forces as different as the cohesion inside the atom and the gravitational tug between the sun and Earth. Wirting with dazzling elegance and clarity, he retraces the steps that have led modern scientists from relativity and quantum mechanics to the notion of super-strings and the idea that our universe may coexist with others. But Weinberg asks as many questions as he answers, among them: Why does each explanation of the way nature works point to other, deeper explanations? Why are the best theories not only logical but beautiful? And what implications will a final theory have for our philosophy and religious faith?Intellectually daring, rich in anecdote and aphorism, Dreams of a Final Theory launches us into a new cosmos and helps us make sense of what we find there.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐This book is an overview of particle physics and the standard model, which lists the detailed components of atomic constituents. They are the smallest components that scientists can detect. The information presented is somewhat dated: he goes on about the Higgs (which was discovered) and the Super Collider project, which has long been cancelled. As an aside: it would be interesting to speculate on what would have happened had we built it. Also, at the time of this book (1992), Dark Matter and Dark Energy were very poorly understood (well more so than today). He knocks philosophy a bit more than necessary. It’s a bit cliche at this point that scientists and philosophers don’t get along. I think they simply don’t understand what each other are trying to do, which is fine. But what’s the point of attacking each other? There are many philosophers who work and contribute in the realm of physics (Tim Maudlin comes to mind), but Weinberg seems to have an ax to grind with certain ones, and thus maligns the whole field. It seems pointless to me.For being dated and some unnecessary info (attacking philosophers with poor arguments), I give this book 3.5 stars/ 5, rounded up.There are better books on the topic, particular the books by Brian Greene. Any of the following are worth checking out:

⭐Excellent book!! I heard theoretical physicist Nima-Arkani Hamed (Particle Fever) recommend this book as one of the few which gave a fair introduction to the questions of fundamental physics. Although slightly outdated (this book went to press, according to the author, on October 1993, right when the Superconducting Super Collider project in Texas was stopped, and therefore before the LHC was built and the Higgs particle discovered), it was really exciting to read the insights from Dr. Weinberg and his views on topics such as electroweak theory… by one of his creators. Great insights also on topics such as philosophy, the search for beauty in physics/mathematics, or even God! To get the most out of this book, I recommend having a background on topics such as quantum mechanics or Einstein’s theory or relativity, but that’s a physicists opinion (me), so if you’re interested in understanding the physicists’ search for the fundamental laws of Nature, just go ahead and read it!

⭐I have already read through Steven Weinberg’s “To Explain The World” and it was great, packed with lots of knowledge. “Dreams of A final Theory” is also interesting and I am about a third of the way through. I also have his “The First Three Minutes”.

⭐Interesting to probe the mind of a nobel laureate. But, perhaps not as good as some of his other writings. but, that said, Weinberg is a fabulous intellectual.

⭐As Nima Arkani-Hamed says, ‘Steven doesn’t need the money, but this book will be good for your soul.’ This is one of the great books on physics and scientific thinking – every scientist and philosopher should have it in their library.

⭐deep, informative

⭐EXCELLENT!!!

⭐Incredibly interesting!

⭐Book not in such as good condition as expected. Tatty and pages yellow. Clearly very old!

⭐This is already third or fourth case when, on Amazon, I buy a book advertised as NEW, but it turns out used, and in poor condition. Amazon should do their job and make sure there is a correspondence between the description of the merchandize and the actual condition. Otherwise it borders on customer fraud.

⭐As always a perfectly written text on GUT for less technically minded enthusiasts

⭐its ok

⭐Understanding the Universe, at its best.
