⭐Having recently discovered my Rusyn ancestry, I picked up Starik Pollock’s book as one of the few (I’ve still to find others) that discuss the contemporary Rusyn challenge in the geopolitical world. The book that emerges is a ‘manifesto’, if I may call it that, which asks those of Rusyn heritage to reflect and value the unique Rusyn heritage, and to reimagine a Rusyn ‘nation’ even if only in societal terms, for now. The author appeals to the Rusyn reader to recognize their duty to strive for sovereignty, and points out the challenges of doing so.However, what is needed now is follow-on volume to provide clear and compelling reasons for ‘why’ those of Rusyn ancestry should strive for sovereignty against overwhelming opposing forces aside from ‘duty’. Those reasons have been lost over years of history, overcome by the cultures and struggles of more powerful nation-states that have absorbed thousands of Rusyn immigrants. The author provides a road map toward sovereignty. Some of us just need a reason to make the trip other than ‘because its my duty’. If you are of Rusyn heritage, read it. It will prompt serious reflection of how our ancestors lost our way as a Rusyn peoples, and what we might owe to those who made us who we are today.
