Description
Breadth of scope is uniqueAuthor is a widely-known and successful textbook authorUnlike many recent textbooks on chaotic systems that have superficial treatment, this book provides explanations of the deep underlying mathematical ideasNo technical proofs, but an introduction to the whole field that is based on the specific analysis of carefully selected examplesIncludes a section on cellular automata
User’s Reviews
Editorial Reviews: Review “This book provides a survey of various topics of dynamical systems. Applications of both the concepts and the results are presented. The author takes the opportunity to explain the underlying fundamental mathematical concepts involved in the results, for example the Conley-Floer theory, which is a topic that is not commonly studied in introductory texts on dynamical systems. The book studies entropy and related concepts within topological, metric, measure theoretic and smooth settings, giving connections with information theory, cellular automata and Boolean networks. The book is written in a careful style. Most of the results are given without proof, though the necessary references for them are included. Many of the results are illustrated through carefully chosen examples.” (Sergio Plaza, Mathematical Reviews) About the Author Jürgen Jost is a widely-known and successful textbook author. Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐Disclaimer: i’ve only read the first 2 chapters. This book took me by surprise, not only because I was unfamiliar with the subject which turned out to be very interesting (I was particularly interested in the material on entropies of dynamical systems). Mainly because the style is easy-going, reminiscent of how a good teacher might explain it live. All this, without being repetitive, vague, or leaving you with the feeling that you’re missing out on something. That said, I have nothing to compare it to on this topic, but I like it.
