User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐I really enjoy to read this book. As a christian interested in the Bible historical-cultural background, I was needing to learn about Second Temple Judaism. I think this book is the best option to learn about this.

⭐Some very good essays from current scholars. While you may not agree with every conclusion, within the diversity there is certainly a lot of “grain for the mill” that will get you thinking about Judaism in the Hellenistic and Roman periods and their influences going forward in history.

⭐I’m only 40% through EARLY JUDAISM: A COMPREHENSIVE OVERVIEW, but can say with confidence that this is most likely the finest scholarship on the subject. The team of scholars who pulled the information together stand on the shoulders of the best scholars of antiquity and contemporaneity. There is far more than one can absorb, but the reliability of information has been thoroughly vetted. It is worth the time invested if only to learn about Philo and Josephus, among others. Each chapter is supported by 4-10 pages of citations.

⭐Collins writes a very coherent history of Judaism with enough detail to be interesting without submerging the reader intovery complicated depths. For the average person looking for more general info about Judaism minus the polemics.

⭐Historically a glimpse of factors which evolved into present beliefs and practices of the Jewish faith interestingly put together by Collinsin a readable volume. An informative perspective which helps in understanding this religion.

⭐Excellent essays on Second Temple Judaism. Lots of interesting facts, suppositions, etc., about the Dead Sea Scolls, apocraphal books of the Tanach (Old Testament) and first century Christianity.

⭐These are well chosen writings giving a current and comprehensive picture of Second Temple Judaism for the interested lay person. They give information from many angles without sectarian bias. If you are seeking to understand rather than be led to a particular dogmatic conclusion, this book is a good choice.

⭐A lot of good info although written at a fairly high academic level. A lot of terminology I was not familiar with (thank goodness for Kindle dictionary), but still worth plowing through it.
