User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐This is an eminent textbook on electromagnetics. I am planning on using it this fall in a subject at MIT. It is, unfortunately, out of print. So, while you can get the odd copy from Amazon, it is uncertain. Fortunately, it is available from:[…]
⭐Excelente compraAn authoritative text on Classical Electromagnetism. The bookis mainly intended for students with a previous firmgrasp on Electro/Magneto-statics and Electrodynamics. It is also an extremely useful reference to comeback to in order to brush up important conceptsfor those devoted to the applications of EM.Written by outstanding scientists
⭐This is the best book I know of on the subject of electromagnetic fields. Profs. Melcher and Haus were superblyqualified and dedicated teachers. The illustrations in the book were all hand-drawn in ink pen by Prof. Melcher. I had the privilege to be a graduate student at MIT in the 1990s and to learn this material from Prof. Melcher and Prof. Haus,so I am very familiar with this book and the teaching style it codifies. This book is not an easy read at first, but every page will pay off with the insights you gain byunderstanding their points. The writing is pretty dense, and you are assumed to be comfortable withvector calculus and other mathematical tools. For me the real gems are the beautiful figures, and the many examples and worked problems. The book will surely reward diligent study. There is an online copy of this book freely available for open-source use. You can find it bysearching on MIT’s open courseware (OCW) web site. There are also online videos of a numberof demonstrations that go with the worked examples. Especially I recommend finding theEdgerton “boomer” video, where Doc Edgerton shows up to run his boomer. The demo of non uniqueness of potential in a changing magnetic field is also a wonderfulpuzzle for those who are used to the idea of measuring any voltage with an oscilloscope. There is also an online copy of Prof. Melcher’s graduate-level text Continuum Electromechanics, which is truly an amazing book, and shows the heart of his research ideas. This can be found throughthe OCW web site also.
⭐This is the text we used for a junior/senior level one semester course on electro and magneto quasistatics. We covered about the first 12 chapters in that class. The book is well written, accurate, and as easy to follow as one can reasonably expect for what is a fairly challenging undergrad course. Prerequisites would be a good understanding of vector calculus from freshman calculus and a semester of freshman physics focusing on E&M. Too bad it is out of print. I keep my signed copy carefully guarded! As others have noted, you can obtain the book in electronic form from the MIT open courseware site.
⭐It is hard to understand why this book is out of print. The authors are deceased as far as I have checked. It is extremely well organized and written, logically presented, full of illustrations, examples, figures and exercises. The text covers electromagnetism at a graduate level, but it is so clearly written that you will be able to gainlots of insights even if you have studied only the basics. Some typos are present in the text but they are easy toidentify and correct. I personally enjoy a lot this bookand recommend it thoroughly. It deserves to be reprintedas a revised version.
⭐Let me first join others here, this books is definitely one of the best in electromagnetics. It is a must for every electrical engineer (not necessarily applicable to digital signal processing etc), but captures the beauty of maxwell equations really well. Also it will make transition to other advanced texts (eg Jackson) lot more easier.[…]
⭐An excellent book and a brain opener on EM theory. To my sorrow many great books like this go out of print.
