Description

Quantum mechanics is one of mankind’s most remarkable intellectual achievements. Stunningly successful and elegant, it challenges our deepest intuitions about the world. In this book, seventeen physicists and philosophers, all deeply concerned with understanding quantum mechanics, reply to Schlosshauer’s penetrating questions about the central issues. They grant us an intimate look at their radically different ways of making sense of the theory’s strangeness. What is quantum mechanics about? What is it telling us about nature? Can quantum information or new experiments help lift the fog? And where are we headed next? Everyone interested in the contemporary but often longstanding conundrums of quantum theory, whether lay reader or expert, will find much food for thought in these pages. A wealth of personal reflections and anecdotes guarantee an engaging read. Participants: Guido Bacciagaluppi, Caslav Brukner, Jeffrey Bub, Arthur Fine, Christopher Fuchs, GianCarlo Ghirardi, Shelly Goldstein, Daniel Greenberger, Lucien Hardy, Anthony Leggett, Tim Maudlin, David Mermin, Lee Smolin, Antony Valentini, David Wallace, Anton Zeilinger, and Wojciech Zurek.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐The book is a fascinating journey into the world of quantum physics. Leading experts provide their opinions into the bleeding edge research being conducted. Some of the answers are somewhat technical but can be comprehended with careful reading.

⭐Interesting to get some expert opinions about the quantum conundrums

⭐This is the best existing summary of the state of the art in the interpretation of the equations of quantum physics.

⭐I’m in agreement with the previous reviewer. This is a neat little book for philosophers and physicists both. By having all the participants from multiple sides answer the same questions, you get an idea of how different their vocabularies and agendas are. Having the physicists and the philosophers both talking also helps see which views have become more popular on each side. The philosophers seem to be more “realistic” these days than the physicists! There are parts I simply couldn’t parse (applying di Finetti’s Theorem to quantum states is still a pretty peculiar notion to me, intuitively), but most of the participants are capable of writing more or less clearly. Mermin, Greenberger, Maudlin, Bub, and Leggett are especially good in being concise as well as cogent.Perspective-wise, the participants break down along a couple main lines:Quantum Information types: Brukner, Fuchs, Mermin, Bub, HardyOld-fashioned realistic types: Maudlin, Ghirardi, Goldstein, Bacciagaluppi, ValentiniCopenhagen collapsers: Fine, Greenberger, ZeilingerMany-worlders: WallaceAgnostics/skeptics: Smolin, Leggett, ZurekThere’s plenty of overlap and significant points of difference within each, but this was where I saw the main lines. It’s a nice mix. The Quantum Information people disagree with the Realistic people on pretty much everything, while those in the other categories help locate the first two categories as part of a larger continuum of opinions.Daunting but worthwhile. Especially for revealing that everybody is still uncertain about what to do with probability as a physics construct. That’s one of the reasons Smolin gives for why he thinks quantum physics is just an approximation of a deeper and more deterministic theory. I can’t say I blame him.
