Description

This book presents the basic ideas of linear algebra in a manner that users will find understandable. It offers a fine balance between abstraction/theory and computational skills, and gives readers an excellent opportunity to learn how to handle abstract concepts. Included in this comprehensive and easy-to-follow manual are these topics: linear equations and matrices; solving linear systems; real vector spaces; inner product spaces; linear transformations and matrices; determinants; eigenvalues and eigenvectors; differential equations; and MATLAB for linear algebra. Because this book gives real applications for linear algebraic basic ideas and computational techniques, it is useful as a reference work for mathematicians and those in field of computer science.

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐This is by far the worst textbook I have ever opened. And I have opened many. All this book is is theorem after theorem, proof after proof, corollary after corollary with little to no explanations and many steps missing. I consider myself good at math, and had a fairly good understanding of Linear Algebra coming in to the class. The textbook just doesn’t make sense much of the time. Not to mention the deluge of typos and in-corrections that I had to go to office hours just to confirm that it was, in fact, a typo. This happened many times. I ordered another Linear Algebra book alongside this one just in case all the one star reviews for this book were right (which they were) and was glad I did. I ordered Linear Algebra Step by Step by Kuldeep Singh, and that book is leaps and bounds ahead of this one, and way way cheaper to boot. Do yourself a favor and go on Khan academy or buy one of the cheaper options instead of this book and save your money.

⭐In short, this book is completely useless as far as teaching me linear algebra. They do a good job telling you all the theorems and corollaries you need to know. However, instead of explaining them, they often launch into a proof that involves obscure steps with no explanation of how or why those steps were used. If they provide an example of the theorem/corollary, the example skips crucial steps worse than an impatient middle-school student with a calculator and often lacks explanations for the steps they provide. The problems in the sections usually either involve skills that are not taught in this book or are proofs that are so obscure that even seeing the answer sheds no light on how they were done. I would rather have questions that involve me using what was taught in the section rather than proofs that are not.Basically, they do a terrible job teaching you the basics that would normally be used to build a solid foundation, and then expect you to build upon that faulty foundation. Anything built upon a faulty foundation collapses in short order. You cannot take what they taught you and apply it to anything more complicated because they did a poor job teaching the basics. They spend far too much time on proofs and not near enough time on the skills behind the proofs. If you are great at proofs and learn from proofs, this book is for you. If proofs are the most obscure and arcane thing to you, stay far away from this book because this book will teach you very little.Edit: Just wanted to add that, if you do have the misfortune of being stuck with this book, don’t use it as your primary tool. Khan Academy has free videos up that do a far-and-beyond-better job at teaching you linear algebra. For free. Do the problem sets, but don’t count on the sections to teach you anything aside from the theorems and corollaries.

⭐This book does a horrible job of explaining information. Don’t use this book as your only source of learning linear algebra. I had more success going on Khan Academy and looking at 6-year-old YouTube videos to help me learn than this doorstopper. If you can, try to find a free PDF version of this book because it isn’t worth renting it.

⭐I like many other students were forced to use this book for my linear algebra course. It is by far the worst book in the world. The book does not tell you how to do any of the problems. I have not learned a thing from this book. I just ordered other supplements to try and learn what is going on. If you have the choice, do not purchase this book. Opt for another book. I will update with suggestions when I find a good one.Update:I liked Dummies Linear Algebra book, it helped get me through the semester. Otherwise, I did not try that hard looking for other books, just forced my way through the class. Also ordered the solutions manual. Might be useful.

⭐This book is not as bad as people are rating on here. It does have some interesting quirks, like not going through projections when trying to cover the Gram Schmidt process, but covering it instead one or two sections later. However, for the price someone pays for this book, they could easily get an array of books including the Dover Edition Linear Algebra book if they are trying to self learn. Also, if you get this as required reading for a linear algebra course, get the book and work with it. The book author has a “unique” way of handling some of the stuff. Sometimes helpful, other times less so.

⭐I’m not sure if the authors themselves understood linear algebra or if they just threw in random poorly tied together examples of the topic in the hopes of getting a published textbook. Buy another textbook if this is recommended for your college course because it is absolutely useless and I only used this for the assigned homework problems

⭐It was a very straight forward textbook and it worked good alongside the classroom lectures.

⭐Purchased for my daughter that is away at college.

⭐Great condition
