Description
The definitive translation of Rousseau’s Emile, a foundational text in the philosophy of education Widely hailed as the most accessible and authoritative edition of Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s Emile, or On Education, this acclaimed translation by bestselling author Alan Bloom elevates what Rousseau considered to be the “best and most important” of his published writing into something more: a prescription, fresh and dazzling, for the education of autonomous, responsible—and truly democratic—human beings. Initially published in 1763 at the height of the Enlightenment, Emile articulates Rousseau’s philosophy of education through the novelistic device of a fictional tutor’s encounters with his pupil from infancy to adolescence, illustrating how ideal citizens can be raised to survive in a corrupt society. In addition to his translation of this classic of Enlightenment philosophy, Bloom offers an incisive introduction that connects the structure and themes of Rousseau’s book to timeless questions about teaching children which have persisted in the field of education, helping readers understand how to implement the philosopher’s broader insights into the possibilities—and limitations—of human nature.

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐This was a fun book to read. It gave you insight into the way Rousseau and the people of the time thought about children, but also how they lived their lives. The book is divided into chapters that cover different aspects of life. First infancy, childhood, preadolescence and finally adolescence. The last chapter is about how to raise girls but I think Rousseau rushed that one. The book is full of philosophical insights on children and their ages as well as fun stories about Rousseau and Emile. Some of the stories are really funny but not meant to be (like taking an infant to an artillery shooting range to get him immune to load noises). Nevertheless after all these years the book still offers plenty of child rearing advice that is useful today (like let kids go outside and play, get exercise and scrap their knees once in a while rather than coddle them).
⭐I got this book really cheap and it was in very good state!
⭐Jean Rousseau’s book Emile is a must read for both parents and those in the educational field. Although his ideas can be controversial there is much that can be applied today.
⭐Melbourne University rated this book amongst the 10 most important books, and has included it in a ‘book-club’ run at the University for those interested into looking into it more deeply
⭐it is in a great condition, however it came little bit late than i expected.but still i am very happy with my purchase. thank you.
⭐Rousseau has an amazing capacity for rapid thought, and digresses quite often into interesting subjects while revealing the education of Emile.
⭐Great book to read
⭐very good
⭐I admit this is not an easy book for everyone, some will not stand it, it is philosophy, you hate it or love it, but if you are interested in it, philosophy in general, but particularly in ethic, I recommend it. This book influenced many great thinkers, like E. Kant, our society and culture would not be the same without books like this one. But I also recommend “Leviathan” (Hobbes), Rousseau read it and influenced him, even if he proposes different thesis in “Emile”, that was in lots of its parts an answer to Hobbes thinking. My favourite chapter is number 4, where Rousseau analyses the problem of evil, the origin, how it spreads and if we can do something about it. It is not a bad start, to read.About the translation, it is a good one, if you cant read the original and you are capable of reading well in English, go for this one.
⭐Good size edition of a classic text. In great condition.
⭐Great !
