Editorial Reviews: From the Inside Flap The Encyclopedia of Nuclear Physics and its Applications intends to fill the need for a coherent overview of fundamental and applied nuclear science, in the form of topical monographic review articles useful to students, research groups and lecturers, but also accessible to a wider, scientifically interested readership. Next to articles on fundamental physics, contributions on interdisciplinary science are included, covering the fields of astrophysics, material analysis and nuclear medicine. The book ends with a comprehensive introduction to the topic of nuclear power generation. From the contents: Part A: Fundamental Nuclear Research • Nuclear Structure • Nuclear Reactions • Electrostatic Accelerators • Linear Accelerators • Exotic Nuclear Beam Facilities • Superheavy Nuclei • Nuclear γ-Spectroscopy and the γ-Spheres • γ Optics and Nuclear Photonics • The Proton • Physics of the Neutron • Neutrino Astrophysics • Nuclear Astrophysics • Relativistic Nucleus-Nucleus CollisionsPart B: Applied Nuclear Physics • Neutron Stars • Supernovae and their Nucleosynthesis • Accelerator Mass Spectrometry and its Applications • Nuclear Medicine • Cancer Therapy with Ion BeamsPart C: Nuclear Power • The Physics of Nuclear Power from Fission and Fusion • Fundamentals of Controlled Nuclear Fission and Essential Characteristics of Pressurized-Water Reactors • Generation IV Nuclear Reactors • Transmutation of High-Level Nuclear Waste by Means of Accelerator Driven System (ADS) • Fusion Energy by Magnetic Confinement • Heavy Ion Inertial Fusion From the Back Cover The Encyclopedia of Nuclear Physics and its Applications intends to fill the need for a coherent overview of fundamental and applied nuclear science, in the form of topical monographic review articles useful to students, research groups and lecturers, but also accessible to a wider, scientifically interested readership. In 1989 he was awarded the Leibniz Prize. Until his retirement he was professor at the High Energy and Particle Physics Department of the Goethe University of Frankfurt. He has authored more than 180 papers. Read more
