⭐I purchased what I thought was a first edition Shames & Dym text, published by McGraw Hill (1985), but received a recent reprinting by CRC Press publisher, and was appalled by the terrible quality of the printing. Most of the figures are unreadable, particularly shaded areas…see the attached pictures. Similar issues were described with the 2003 reprinting by Taylor & Francis (the one with the yellow cover), which my professor owns. I compared my book to his, and concluded that the CRC edition is literally a copy OF this copy, as evidenced by copy machine marks left in the margins by the publisher. It should be noted that this is NOT the international edition, but a brand new hardcover book.For $133, this book should be in immaculate condition. The fact that I cannot read the figures has rendered the book unusable. Do not fall victim of this scam!
⭐I ordered this for a class I was taking. The book showed up very quickly but it is overall very cheap. A friend has a first edition version and when I compared the two my pages look as if they are photocopied because of lower clarity and they aren’t square on the page. If that doesn’t bother you then it’s fine.
⭐I purchased this item new from Amazon. I’m not commenting about the quality of the content but the quality of the print. It seems that the book is literally a photocopy of the original version. the figures have lost the quality. There is no gray shadings it is just black dots!
⭐I really like this book. It help me a lot in additional knowledge in structural mechanics. It gives a very good approach on the energy method as well as the calculus of variations. Although i would not recommend this book for studying about calculus of variations (not a book for beginner`s in this field). The book gives good details about beams (and other not so well known theories and approaches for solutions) and also plates. It deals with shear deformation as well as buckling. This book is recommended not only for civil engineering students but also for mechanical engineering. The book also provided basics for finite element analysis. But the approach of the discussion for the FEM should not be considered for an introductory course. All in all for what i`m looking for this book (mainly about plates) it is fairly complete. It is a very good book and very satisfying to read.
⭐This is a wonderful book I have ever come across in structural engineering. Professors Shames & Dym deserve all praise for the amount of hard work, they have put in it. This book covers almost all essentials required for structural engineers especially who are involved in reseach as I am, in the field of advanced solid mechanics, theory of plates and further in finite element analysis. The way calculus of variation has been discussed with the help of comprehensive examples is magnificent.I am highly influenced by this book while taking courses for theory of elasticity, theory of elastic stability, theory of plates and fininte element.
⭐An old classic by an elegant author who really makes his books stand separately from others for its high mathematical rigour all his books are treasure for engineering students of aeronautical, civil, and mechanical students I would like to thank new age publishers to bring this book to all Indian public and Amazon for making it available at national platform.
⭐Superb book. Every book of Irving H Shames is the best book.
⭐It’s a highly recommended book for who wants to dig deeper into variational principles of mechanics.
⭐本書は「材料力学と変分法」(ブレイン図書出版)の原著である。ただ、日本語版より有限要素法の章だけ記述が多くなっている。オイラービーム、ティモシェンコビーム、キルヒホッフプレート、ミンドリンプレート等を歪みエネルギーから変分法を用いて導く過程が詳細に記述されている。最近変分法について扱った本は少なく、大学でもそれほど詳しく扱わないので、一度読んでみることをお勧めする。
