Description
Almost 600 letters written by Ernest Hemingway between 1917 and 1961 that provide an intimate portrait of one of the most original and influential American writers. While many people are familiar with the public image of Hemingway and the legendary accounts of his life, few knew him as an intimate. With this collection of letters, a new Hemingway emerges. Ranging from 1917 to 1961, this generous selection of nearly six hundred letters is, in effect, both a self-portrait and an autobiography. In his own words, Hemingway candidly reveals himself to a wide variety of people: family, friends, enemies, editors, translators, and almost all the prominent writers of his day. In so doing he proves to be one of the most entertaining letter writers of all time. Carlos Baker has chosen letters that not only represent major turning points in Hemingway’s career but also exhibit character, wit, and the writer’s typical enthusiasm for hunting, fishing, drinking, and eating. A few are ingratiating, some downright truculent. Others present his views on writing and reading, criticize books by friend or foe, and discuss women, soldiers, politicians, and prizefighters. Perhaps more than anything, these letters show Hemingway’s irrepressible humor, given far freer rein in his correspondence than in his books. An informal biography in letters, the product of forty-five years’ living and writing, Ernest Hemingway: Selected Letters leaves an indelible impression of an extraordinary man.
User’s Reviews
Editorial Reviews: About the Author Ernest Hemingway did more to change the style of English prose than any other writer of his time. Publication of The Sun Also Rises and A Farewell to Arms immediately established Hemingway as one of the greatest literary lights of the twentieth century. His classic novel The Old Man and the Sea won the Pulitzer Prize in 1953. Hemingway was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954. His life and accomplishments are explored in-depth in the PBS documentary film from Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, Hemingway. Known for his larger-than-life personality and his passions for bullfighting, fishing, and big-game hunting, he died in Ketchum, Idaho on July 2, 1961.
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐I bought this book used. I’d gotten it from the library but realized shortly into reading them that I wanted to have Hemingway’s letters around. I am a writer, so I like hearing about the writing process of other writers—and when you read a writer’s letters, that’s invariably what you get. He was a very disciplined writer. And I’m amazed at how much of his fiction comes from his knowledge gained through experience, which is true for most writers, but Hemingway invested himself deeply in everything he did, from boxing (mostly watching it) and bullfighting (again, watching it). Then to be able to describe what he watched, or incorporate that language into his writing—well, I loved reading about it. I felt like I was traveling when I read his letters. He could be a harsh critic of others and often lost friends, as a result, and was not a completely faithful husband. He could be a real jerk. Nevertheless, he’s a huge talent and his letters reflect that.
⭐This book of Hemingway letters is quite amazing! It is one of the thickest books I ever saw, and it must weigh 10 lbs! It is chock-full of personal letters & correspondence between Papa Hemingway and his many acquaintances! I just today received this gorgeous book and I am stunned by the total volume of the letters he wrote! I hope to gain knowledge by reading and studying this treasure trove, and I think Anyone else who studies them will do the same!Thank You, Papa Hemingway!
⭐First of all, Hemingway never wanted any of his letters published. Second, an academic – Carlos Baker – edited them. Teaching literature always seemed to me an occupation for people who want to be writers and don’t have any talent. Reading Baker’s biography of Hemingway confirms that. When professors write about what real writers do, I’m always suspect. If professors could write – or practice law, or act, or make films – they wouldn’t be “teaching.”Hemingway’s life was really a mess. This book is another chronicle of that mess. I don’t think it’s worth reading. What are you going to get out of it? A warning? You certainly don’t want to emulate this boor. Read the bible instead. There are better warnings in it.
⭐This book unwrapped the EH’s personality.I am not sure that I would be a friend w/ EH if I had a chance to meet him. However, I am still amazed w/ his novels.
⭐being enjoyed by the giftee
⭐What can I say? Read these and you will see the man behind the bluster and legend. Funny, self-effacing, often shy and apologetic, almost unfailingly polite and deferential. I loved them.
⭐Intriguing, insightful, and left me yearning for the next page.
⭐I didnt like it because it was under my expectation. Maybe they select the letters that would was great for them, not to the readers who are interested about Hemingway true life.
⭐FROM these collected letters we can Glimpse amid the compulsive self promotion and mythologizing a kind and thoughtful man..But how Desperate he must have been for whatever reason..to live his Life of endlessly re-enforced Masculinity..ending up as a spent and paranoid Bore .. a Good Read ..
⭐Good service and the book was as described…
⭐This could become one of my favorite book. Very interesting letters about Hemingway personal life, his writing and dealing with his editors.
⭐Es un pedido muy personal. No se si le puede interesar a otras personas, pero tanto en el estado en que se encontraba el libro, como en el tiempo que ha tardado, ha cumplido las expectativas.
