    Description

After its successful landing at Inchon and capture of Seoul in September 1950, the U.S. X Corps was joined by Eighth Army, and many people expected the two commands to be combined into one. Instead, General MacArthur ordered the X Corps to load onto ships and travel around the peninsula to northeastern Korea and the port city of Wonsan, which the South Korean I Corps had captured. Major elements of X Corps were to move west from their positions in northeast Korea and cut the supply lines of Chinese troops expected to cross the Yalu and confront Eighth Army. Other parts of X Corps would push north toward the border and thus control all of Korea. Neither goal was met. Escaping the Trap tells what happened when X Corps discovered that the Chinese had crossed the Yalu unseen and marched rapidly to Chosin Reservoir, where they landed a surprise attack against the 1st Marine Division and the army’s 31st Regimental Combat Team of the 7th Infantry Division. The Chinese attack in late November 1950 virtually annihilated the 31st RCT east of Chosin, while the 1st Marine Division made an escape through treacherous terrain and a forty-mile roadblock, pushing on to the coast and the monumental evacuation of X Corps from North Korea. Roy E. Appleman’s study of the day-to-day records of X Corps and of published material and his interviews and correspondence with survivors make the whole story of this portion of the Korean War available for the first time.

⭐I have been study the Korean War for a few years now and I have found myself always going back to the Marine Chosin Campaign. Although I prefer actual “Memoir” books than “College” type books, Roy Applemans’ books are usually some of the best. “Escaping the Trap” is just as good if not better than some of the “Memoir” books. It is a tough read straight through and since I have been studying the Chosin Campaign, this book is great to skip around the different chapters. There is very FEW information out there about the Army’s part in the East of Chosin due to the fact that the Army is very embarrased by the events of Chosin. Any one that wants to learn more about Chosin, I will gladly send them to any of Applemans’ books as well as the other books that I have read. The best by far is “Breakout” by Martin Russ. “Last Stand of Fox Company” by Bob Drury and Tom Clavin. “Colder Than Hell” by Joseph Owen and a lot of other books out there. But I do not blame the Heroes of the X Corps who fought to survive and did what they had to do with given what they had from their Command. If MacArthur’s ego did not get in the way of ALL of the intelligence that came through about the CCF waiting for them, than the events of 25 November to 10 December would not have happened. Being a former Marine and currently in the Army, I am very proud of those that fought to allow me to serve and it is a shame that Korea is indeed the “Forgotten” War by many. But not by me and I want to send out a BIG “THANK YOU” to the Korean Veterans if any should read this. YOU ARE NOT FORGOTTEN BY ME!!!

⭐I used the book’s content to compare and contrast with my father-in-laws personal recollections of the campaign’s battle on East Hill of Hagaru ri; 10 Eng Combat Bn, Dog Co, 3rd platoon Platoon Sgt. Fascinating details in the book, all of which help the author give respect and credit to US Army units involved who, immediately after the campaign were criticized severely and in many cases unjustly. Yet, as with many “historical records” written in the field by participants, details of important facts are flawed in some cases.

⭐After reading East of Chosin I thought Escaping the Trap would cover X Corps with an emphasis on the elements of the US Army. While it was an excellent book it covered the USMC units much more than the US Army. Not what I was looking for.

⭐I enjoyed reading this book as I was with the 4th Signal Battalion in escaping the trap. The book looks like it was in new condition and sent by Berkley Hall Books 5Hickory Lane Madison, Ct 06443 at a very reasonable price and fast delivery. J guglich

⭐North Korea has been called the “forgotten war”. After reading the history of the Marines and Army units that made up the X Corps of MacArthur’s successful conquest of North Korea, until over 100,000 Chinese crossed the frozen Yalu River that divided China and North Korea, I now know that this has been a “forgotten victory”. It is amazing what men can endure under extreme cold, and overwhelming odds to successfully conduct a fighting withdrawal from the North Korean mountains to the sea.

⭐While Chosin always comes to mind. It is important to remember the rest of the Tenth Corps.Like Disaster in Korea, Appleman does in outstanding job documenting the actions of the army and marine corps escape from ANNIHILATION.All of Appleman’s books must be owned to have a true understanding of Korea.

⭐I thoroughly enjoyed the book. It gave a balanced account of a terrible time in American military history and described the disastrous situation facing X Corps at Chosin. It also gave a clear and even handed account of the heroic but tragic fate of Task Force Faith, a subject that has been overlooked by a number of authors.

    ⭐Great seller and book
