⭐This is a wonderful survey of basic physics, covering Newton’s Laws of Motion, atoms and molecules, states of matter, thermodynamice, electricity and magnetism, quantum mechanics and its use in understanding a range of phenomena [chemistry, electronic properties of matter (insulators, semiconductors,conductors, superconductors) magnetism, superfluidity], relativity, aspects of nuclear and particle physics, astrophysics and cosmology – all covered in less than 200 pages, without appearing to skimp on any of them. From a current-day perspective (the book was written in 1997), the only topic that I felt was missing is perhaps quantum information and quantum computing.It is largely a qualitative description of the physics of nature – certainly not without some simple equations and quantification of phenomena, but calculus is avoided; there are no differential equations in sight. I would recommend this to any A-level student of physics, and indeed I’m sure undergraduate physicists, school teachers and any interested members of the general public would also find this stimulating.
