Description

High in the Andes, Dr. Henry Conklin discovers a 500-year-old mummy that should not be there. While deep in the South American jungle, Conklin’s nephew, Sam, stumbles upon a remarkable site nestled between two towering peaks, a place hidden from human eyes for thousands of years.

Ingenious traps have been laid to ensnare the careless and unsuspecting, and wealth beyond imagining could be the reward for those with the courage to face the terrible unknown. But where the perilous journey inward ends–in the cold, shrouded heart of a breathtaking necropolis–something else is waiting for Sam Conklin and his exploratory party. A thing created by Man, yet not humanly possible. Something wondrous . . . something terrifying.

User’s Reviews

Review From the opening scene high in the Andes to the stunning finish, Excavation is a real page turner. — Douglas Preston, co-author with Lincoln Child of THE ICE LIMIT From the Author About James RollinsJAMES ROLLINS is a #1 New York Times bestselling author of international thrillers that have been translated into more than forty languages. Known for unveiling unseen worlds, scientific breakthroughs, and historical secrets, Rollins’ knack for breakneck pacing and stunning originality has been hailed by critics and embraced by scores of millions of readers around the world. The Critics RaveThe New York Times says that his “roguish charm comes from his efforts to persuade readers the story is credible [through] real-life sources for his novel’s science, history and geography.” Rollins’ rare blend of action, suspense, and knowledge was also mentioned by the Huffington Post, which stated that “After Crichton passed away in 2008 he clearly passed the baton to James Rollins, who like Crichton, is a renaissance man.”NPR calls his work “adventurous and enormously engrossing…” and the New York Journal of Books had this to say: “If you’re a fan of smart, entertaining adventure fiction, this is your summer beach read writ large….All the science, all the history, and all the locations are masterfully intertwined. The characters are multi-dimensional. And the story is, well, a corker.”The Story Teller’s StoryAs a boy immersed in the scientific adventures of Doc Savage, the wonders of Jules Verne and H.G. Wells, and pulps such as The Shadow, The Spider, and The Avenger, James Rollins decided he wanted to be a writer. He honed his storytelling skills early, spinning elaborate tales that were often at the heart of pranks played on his brothers and sisters. Before he would set heroes and villains on harrowing adventures, Rollins embarked on a career in veterinary medicine, graduating from the University of Missouri and establishing a successful veterinary practice. This hands-on knowledge of medicine and science helps shape the research and scientific speculation that set James Rollins books apart.Explosive Page-Turning AdventuresThe exotic locales of James Rollins novels have emerged as a hybrid between imagination, research, and his extensive travels throughout the United States and Europe, as well as New Zealand, the South Pacific, China, Southeast Asia, Africa, Australia, and South America. Recent jaunts include book tours and stops across the country and several European nations to give talks, seminars, and media interviews. In recent years, much of James’ travel has involved meeting readers in small and large groups, at writing and fan conferences, and even aboard seagoing “seminars.” James’ mentoring and coaching skills have made him a sought after writing instructor and guest speaker for workshops, symposia, conventions, and other forums throughout the country.James Rollins is the author of nine thrillers in the bestselling Sigma Force series (Sandstorm, Map of Bones, Black Order, The Judas Strain, The Last Oracle, The Doomsday Key, The Devil Colony, Bloodline, and The Eye of God); six individual adventure thrillers; and the Jake Ransom middle grade series (Jake Ransom and the Skull King’s Shadow, Jake Ransom and the Howling Sphinx.) From the Inside Flap Explore the wildly inventive, thrill-ride adventure set deep in the mysterious jungles of South America from New York Times bestselling author James RollinsExcavationWhile on an expedition to Peru, archeologist Dr. Henry Conklin makes several startling discoveries. High amid the snowcapped Andes a mysterious mummy is found hidden in a cave. And deep in the sweltering jungle below, the remains of an ancient Incan city are unearthed.Nestled between two soaring peaks, this mysterious ancient territory called the Cloud Ruins has remained undisturbed for centuries, protected by ingenious traps that only the most clever and courageous dare to maneuvre. But where the perilous journey inward ends-in the cold, shrouded heart of a breathtaking necropolis-something else is waiting for Conklin, his nephew Sam, and their exploratory party. A think created by man, yet not human. Something powerful…something astonishing…something terrifying. And now their amazing adventure of discovery has been transformed in to the ultimate challenge: survival.

Reviews from Amazon users, collected at the time the book is getting published on UniedVRG. It can be related to shiping or paper quality instead of the book content:

⭐ An very interesting sci-fi archaeology concept that did not go anywhere. Spoiler alert. Old theme of bad guys, good guys and add a lost Inca tribe. The Inca temple and with the discovery of a lost tribe in a sci-fi theme could have made a great story, what you get is a a mish mash of several needless character developments missing a coherent story line. I read several of Mr. Rollins books, this one was forgettable.

⭐ This book caught & held my attention for several days … literally put me in the middle of everything going on; what a ride! So many things don’t get done when a book is this good & dogs are clustered all around & on me, waiting for their mom (again). I highly recommend this book to anyone that like vicarious adventures.

⭐ I got hooked on Rollins with his Sigma Series. This one, along with Amazonia are at least as good, though both titles are stand alone.Rollins puts you right into the story and uses many factual, historical and/or scientific garnish to liven things up!I admit I’d put off reading both Amazonia and Excavation because I felt the titles were kind of blah. But I’m really glad I didn’t judge these books by their titles!

⭐ OMGS! I’ve always been a fan of James Rollins, and this book blew my mind! Awesome, amazing in a long list of amazing! How he comes up with these great plots —! The plot is outstanding, the archeological facts stunning, the characters believable. A truly wonderful read for everyone who loves a mix of science, history, and action. Could not put it down!!

⭐ A bit overlong, but consistently engaging, this book reads like Indiana Jones on steroids. Great fun, it’s characters are well drawn enough to enhance your sense of danger and excitement. Preposterous, but highly effective , this is a great example of cliff-hangers galore.

⭐ Indiana Johns adventure mystery suspense mixed with Incas God’s and underworld, hard science, Spanish inquisition , nanotechnology and extraterrestrial civilization. What could one ask for more……Well written with loving side of humanity and good humor..

⭐ At the outset I will say that I am a huge fan of James Rollins’ stand alone novels. I definately prefer them to the Sigma Force franchise, although I have not read that many Sigma Force novels (it may be an unfair comparison). Excavation follows a group of young archeologists who have discovered a hidden underground city and lost tribe not too mention a very funky golden substance. As usual Rollins opens with a neat prologue that sets up the story, there’s the usual nefarious types and stoic heroes.I did not enjoy Excavation as much as Subterranean and Amazonia, but that’s just personal preference. Excavation is a good read and exciting. As with both those novels, I would recommend Excavation for teenage boys and older. There is some language and violence, but nothing that wouldn’t be heard or seen on TV, and its a small price to pay to get teenage boys reading. That being said, my father-in-law loves these books as do I.

⭐ “Excavation” starts out on an archeological dig in the Peruvian Andes. We get underground tunnels and a sealed door, cave-ins, would-be tomb robbers, mummified bodies, and ancient booby-traps. All fast-paced, entertaining and fairly plausible. From there on, this tale becomes increasingly fantastic until it all gets a bit hard to swallow. If you can suspend your disbelief enough to accept the last quarter of the book, though, it continues to be fast-paced and entertaining. Until the last half-dozen pages or so. At that point Rollins gets downright maudlin in his efforts to wrap up the romantic entanglements. Then comes the epilogue, which wraps up some loose ends with and definitely scifi explanation and leaves lots of room for sequels. As I said, “Excavation” gets pretty fantastic before its over, but I suppose it’s no more difficult to accept that most scifi I’ve read. It was fun and the action never let up. Its all very shallow, there are no deep concepts being explored here, but scifi fans and those who enjoy the kind of techno-thrillers by writers like Crichton (although it isn’t quite as polished as Crichton’s work) will like this book, as well.

⭐ I have loved almost all of James Rollins’s work. Like some of his other novels, you must suspend disbelief about some parts of the plot because they are a bit wild. (But that’s the fun part for me, really. He is such a clever author with a fantastic imagination.) I don’t know why more people don’t know about him? Every time I recommend his books to someone, they never know who I am talking about. (I’m a public Librarian, so I end up recommending him to a lot of people.) Once someone has read one of his novels, however, they always come back for more! Maybe Rollins is a humble guy who is just more into writing than in self-promotion? I don’t know, but he is an AMAZING writer and this book is great.

⭐ Like many of Rollins’ books, you have to suspend disbelief to finish it. But if you’re willing to do that, you should enjoy this book. 3 stars for entertainment value.
