Description

This second edition has been updated and substantially expanded. Starting with the description of our home galaxy, the Milky Way, this cogently written textbook introduces the reader to the astronomy of galaxies, their structure, active galactic nuclei, evolution and large scale distribution in the Universe. After an extensive and thorough introduction to modern observational and theoretical cosmology, the focus turns to the formation of structures and astronomical objects in the early Universe. The basics of classical astronomy and stellar astrophysics needed for extragalactic astronomy are provided in the appendix. While this book has grown out of introductory university courses on astronomy and astrophysics and includes a set of problems and solutions, it will not only benefit undergraduate students and lecturers; thanks to the comprehensive coverage of the field, even graduate students and researchers specializing in related fields will appreciate it as a valuable reference work.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐This is the 2nd edition of an Amazon 5 star 1st edition. This edition is not only larger by height and width, but at 4.5 lbs, it is over 160 pages longer. New pages are devoted to further expansion of previous coverage, presentation of new astronomical discoveries, as well as the newly introduced and highly illuminating end-of-chapter problems with their full solutions at the end of the book. True to its German origins, the writing is precise and analytical with editing that is nearly flawless and quality color graphs and photographs. This is a textbook in the true sense of the word and what makes the expositions so broad in scope and detailed in coverage is the great focus and economy in the use of language where pages are not filled with arm-chair predictions and the reader is not engaged in the speculative astronomy of Multiverses, wormholes and the like. What is left therefore is a massive 626-page book with an 8-page list of contents which attempts to leave no stone unturned when it comes to deep space astronomy and astronomical methods. The presentations are based on proven principles, observations and pertinent mathematical equations where all steps in the use and derivation of equations are shown from first principles and are explained in as many words and the important conclusions emphasized in shaded blocks.Author’s mastery of the subject as professor of Astrophysics at Bonn university is evident throughout, and his outstanding linguistics has provided the inquisitive and serious reader with a substantial work of astronomy that is not easily matched in textbooks by u.s. academicians.

⭐Absolutely outstanding!! The amount of information is unbelievable. It’s hard to imagine how Schneider was able to encompass such a large volume of material and explain the vast breadth of astronomy in such a clear, but precise and detailed manner.

⭐Book quality was excellent and arrived within estimated time

⭐The content in this book is pretty good. Shame you’ll never get to read half of it, as the pages almost immediately start falling out and float away in the wind. Literally one day after the window to return the book closed, ~10 pages came out with more falling out shortly thereafter. I take good care of my books, I have a reference shelf full of them that have lasted for many years with no problems. There’s no taking care of something though when it’s designed to immediately disintegrate. It’s a damn shame because this book is one I would have wanted to keep for a long time.

⭐Excellent text and reference for the study of galaxies and cosmology.

⭐DO NOT BUY THE HARDCOVER VERSION. Fantastic book, but terrible, horrible, awful binding. It seems that the publisher made the hardcover version hoping that no one would open it or try to read it. A book this large cannot stay together with glue binding. I read it for literally one day and it completely fell apart. I had to go to a book bindery to rebind the pages, and now I love it.

⭐The binding is poor and cracked in 3 different paces when I was leafing through the book.

⭐This book by Peter Schneider gives an impressively thorough description and analysis of the state of both current galactic research and its implications for modern cosmological theories. As such, this book is certainly not for the faint of heart! Brief overviews of the topics at the start of each chapter are followed by detailed mathematical analysis (upper undergraduate/graduate school level) of the latest data gathered from both ground based observations and satellite missions. This data is then compared with the latest and best theoretical explanations.Chapters include:1. Introduction and Overview- Types of galaxies, the Hubble expansion, types of telescopes, galactic surveys.2. The Milky Way as a Galaxy- Various methods for determining distance, Milky Way structures and kinematics, Dark Matter and Dark Energy.3. The World of Galaxies- Elliptical, Spiral and Irregular galaxies, composition, structure, luminosities, star populations, gravitational lensing.4. Cosmology I: Homogeneous Isotropic World Models- Basic observations, expansion of the universe, the Big Bang, thermal history, the Standard Model of cosmology.5. Active Galactic Nuclei- History and discovery, quasars, radio galaxies, black holes, spectroscopic analysis, Active Galactic Nuclei models.6. Clusters and Groups of Galaxies- The Local Group, cluster searches and dynamics, gravitational cluster lensing.7. Cosmology II: Inhomogeneities in the Universe- Gravitational instabilities, density fluctuations, structural evaluations, dark matter halos and lensing.8. Cosmology III: The Cosmological Parameters- Redshift galaxies, supernovae surveys, the cosmological constant, cosmic shear, the Cosmic Microwave Background, Dark Energy.9. The Universe at High Redshift- High redshift galaxies, deep views of the universe at different wavelengths, new types of galaxies.10. Galaxy Evolution- Formation of Disk and Elliptical galaxies and their dark matter halos, numerical simulations.11. Outlook- Future progress and challenges. One last personal observation: After the first couple chapters I found the end of chapter problems to be very hard (even with the solutions given). And, as I mentioned earlier, the advanced mathematical analysis lost me at times. But in spite of all this I learned a lot and highly recommend this book to anyone with a serious interest in galactic astronomy and cosmology!

⭐What a superb book. After studying Cosmology and General Relativity personally for a few years (and buying all the classics books : Misner, Thorne, Wheeler, Wald, Hobson et al. (excellent!), Carroll and Ostlie; Weinberg; Schutz etc. I found this. What an amazing book!! It was written for University students to be a comprehensive source on the theory and observational aspects of Galaxies and Cosmology. It’s such a wonderfully rich resource!!I found that all the above classical texts didn’t really give a ‘feel’ for the observational side, whilst the standard observational cosmology books are too woolly . I am more of a theorist and love the theoretical approach, but without a full understanding of the observational side there will always be something lacking in the modelling. So I was delighted to find this.I’d say all undergraduates, graduated and amateurs would find this text incredibly useful. As for which format. Choose the paperback. It’s well made and will last a long time. It is a shame people are downgrading their view of the book just because of the binding on the hardback. (I urge those reviews to change their review score!!)If I could have given it 6 stars I would.

Ich betrachte es als die Bibel der Kosmologie.I just received my copy (Oct 13/2017) having ordered it assuming that the concerns others have raised in past years about poor binding would have long since been resolved. Sadly the copy I received has the same issues. The book opens unnaturally flat because the pages are barely held in place and so the binding offers almost no resistance to opening wider than any similar sized book would. You immediately get the sense that as long as you don’t open it, the pages will be fine, if you get my meaning. It’s ironic though because otherwise, the production seems almost lavish for an advanced physics textbook. Nearly every page has a diagram, graph or full colour drawing/photo, and the pages have a decent heft especially when compared to many texts these days which are printed on paper so thin you can see through them. The book is physically quite large and heavy with every page dense with text, equations and graphics. Content-wise, the amount of information on display here is astounding, and based on going through the first chapter, the writing seems exceptionally clear. It’s easy to imagine this book was a labour of love by the author. So in spite of the binding concerns, I’m giving this book 5 stars based on the content.

⭐This is the best book on cosmology that I know of. It gives the latest theories, explained very well even for nonexperts, and it also presents the mathematics, carefully done to be as readable as possible and to eliminate all irrelevant complexities. Highly recommended to any intelligent person who wants to go further than popular science! I would assume that even experts would find it refreshing reading (I am not an expert on cosmology, but I do publish scientific articles in other areas).

⭐Testo ben bilanciato fra teoria e artcoli, sintesi e grafici e foto.
