Description

Many books have been written on the Bible and evolution by scientists, but this volume is written by a biblical specialist. In Faith and Fossils Lester Grabbe, a prominent Hebrew Bible scholar, examines the Bible in its ancient context and explores its meaning in light of emerging scientific evidence. Both the Bible and the fossil record raise significant questions about what it means to be human, and Grabbe expertly draws on both sources to grapple with who we are and where we came from. Written in uncomplicated language and featuring eleven spectacular color plates, Grabbe’s Faith and Fossilscreatively shows how science and faith intersect in questions about human origins.

User’s Reviews

Editorial Reviews: Review Booklist “Grabbe asserts that religion and science are not necessarily incompatible and they can exist side by side harmoniously so long as the respective adherents do not poach on the others’ territory. His illuminating work will doubtless invite thought and serious discussion by both camps.”Christopher Rollston — George Washington University “In this wonderful volume Lester Grabbe brings to the table the profound knowledge of a gifted biblical scholar—but a knowledge that is accompanied by pastoral sensitivities. Entirely absent, therefore, are polemics. And that which is present can only be described as erudition and compassion. His Faith and Fossils will build bridges between people on all sides of this hotly debated subject. I heartily recommend it.” About the Author Lester L. Grabbe is Professor Emeritus of Hebrew Bible and Early Judaism at the University of Hull. His other books include Ancient Israel: What Do We Know and How Do We Know It? (second edition).

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐This is a hard book to review. At the halfway point, I was saying this would be one of the best books on the topic I’d ever read. And there was some excellent stuff in the second half, too.But along the way there was a lot of Meh as well. The stuff I loved, I LOVED, like his stuff on Genesis 1. But there seemed to be stuff missing, or things that just missed the mark. Like he mentions toward then end how untenable the 24-hour-days proposal is for understanding Genesis 1, but I don’t remember that section, so either he didn’t really discuss it, or the discussion wasn’t that helpful.Bottom line, if you teach on this subject, this is a great book for illustrations and information. Definitely recommended. But if you are looking for a book to give someone who is committed to Young Earth Creationism, this probably isn’t it.Three stars is probably too low. It’s more like a 3.5, but not a 4, and definitely not the 5 I thought it was early on. I’ll probably refer to it often, but unless you already agree with where he is going–or are already moving toward a theistic evolution or evolutionary creationist perspective, this book probably isn’t going to move your needle.

⭐This is an excellent summary and overview of the perceived conflicts between theology and science. It covers a wide range of topics related to science at an introductory level that is easy to read but thorough. If you are looking for a good starting point to understand the main issues and points of contention in these areas, covered in a balanced and respectful way I would recommend this book. The references and bibliography provide useful resources for further detailed study.

⭐I bought this book as a balance between literature on both theism and athiesm in my bookshelf. This knowledgeable , qualified author and believer delivered what I was looking for. It was a bit pedantic and heavy going in some places but a second reading resolved that concern. Approach the book with an open mind and you’ll find it well worth the read.

⭐I was really hoping for an in depth biblical discussion of the issues surrounding evolution etc but the bulk of this book is a restatement of current scientific positions with some quotations from a few scientists. The few bits of biblical discussion were interesting but not very in depth. This book was 95% science 5% biblical

⭐Grabbe began as a Bible-believing evangelical. In the book he presents the evidence (mostly scientific evidence for evolution) that convinced him that he was wrong. Unfortunately, his solution to the problem is not a Bible-believing evangelical solution, but (as near as I can make out) a “progressive” Protestant solution in which the Bible does not carry the authority Grabbe once believed it had.The scientific evidence he presents is quite good, in my opinion. His solution to the Bible authority problem is not one that I recommend.

⭐I think this is one of the most epic books of this century and the last. Lester Grabbe is my favorite author and all of his books are formidable, clear, and easy to understand. I love the beautiful dichotomy between Creationism and Evolution and how Mr. Grabbe reconciles the two with his insanely clear insights and kind, gentle nature.

⭐I bought this as a gift and it was in good shape on arrival.

⭐Before I read this book I was having a crisis of faith, although not a scientist i have always had a fascination with archaeology, paleontology, as well as both human and natural history. I make it a habit to keep up on the latest scientific information. I was raised as a protestant Christian and was taught by my parents and church to believe in the young earth theory. I was seeing myself more and more how that simply could not be, and as such i was having a personal crisis of faith. Reading this has refreshed my faith and made it stronger, and opened up a whole new interesting world for myself. Although I was always quite familliar with evolutionary science before, I never regarded it as fully real or truthful, just a really cool story, but not real. I can now say that i do accept evolution as the truth, and what a fascinating, amazing, and endlessly interesting way for God to have created the world!
