Description

How do cats land on their feet? A “lively, entertaining” look at how the question stumped brilliant minds for centuries—and what was learned along the way (Ars Technica). The question of how falling cats land on their feet has long intrigued humans. In this playful and eye-opening history, physicist and cat parent Gregory Gbur explores how attempts to understand the cat-righting reflex have provided crucial insights into puzzles in mathematics, geophysics, neuroscience, and human space exploration. The result is an engaging tumble through physics, physiology, photography, and robotics to uncover, through scientific debate, the secret of the acrobatic performance known as cat-turning, the cat flip, and the cat twist. You’ll learn the solution—but also discover that the finer details still inspire heated arguments. As with other cat behavior, the more we investigate, the more surprises we discover.“[An] extremely well-written popular science book.” —James Kakalios, author of The Physics of Superheroes“Engrossing.” —Sean Carroll, author of Something Deeply Hidden: Quantum Worlds and the Emergence of Spacetime

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐Having been a long time owner of multiple cats over the years (including a Singapore street cat), learning more about the physics of how cats are cats is always a journey worth traveling.

⭐If there is to be a definitive book on the subject of cat flipping, this is it. Greg Gbur’s *fundamental* understanding of physics, an obsessive curiosity for original source documents, and an incisive wit make this book stand out from anything else I have read in the “pop science” genre. If you are a historian or physicist, I think you will be awed by the bibliography. It is jaw-dropping to watch the author demonstrate, without irony or hyperbole, that the effort to understand the physics of cats has led directly to some amazing scientific breakthroughs. To its special credit, the book is approachable and never stuffy because… cats. You will feel smarter when you have finished reading it.

⭐Who knew a book about how cats land on their feet could be so fascinating? It really is! The author is a physics professor who obviously loves cats but that’s not the point of the book – instead, it’s a trip through history and how (who knew?) scientists have been studying and debating for over 300 years how cats manage their “flipping” to land on their feet ! And this research has lead to advances in a host of areas of science – even space exploration and robotics. It’s a great read and a fine example of excellent science writing for lay people. And cat lovers will enjoy it, too!

⭐This little book makes you learn things in spite of your expectations.

⭐I went into with no real expectations and came out thoroughly delighted. This is not dry academic text, this is a story of science and the people who drive our knowledge of the world forward. A fascinating historical tale with an interesting cast of characters that doesn’t get bogged down with too many technical details. Highly Recommended.

⭐Obviously, the central theme is the puzzling question of how cats always land on their feet, but along the way, the author covers a ton of scientific discoveries throughout history, from photography to space flight, and it makes for a pretty fun read.Highly recommended for anyone with an interest in science, even if you don’t have cats. 🙂

⭐I had put this off, because I’m not a big STEM person. Physics = dense formulas, right? No!What a fun read. It combines history, theory, and images while examining fundamental errors, and I found it fascinating.Who knew there were so many theoretical repercussions from housecats?!

⭐Fun to read and really it’s cats and science. What more would you want?

⭐The author failed to actually define what he wants to say. Way too long and superficial.
