Description
“Buckle up and take this voyage,” says People. The journey begins with Temperance Brennan hearing shocking news on her car radio. An Air TransSouth flight has gone down in the mountains of western North Carolina, taking with it eighty-eight passengers and crew. As a forensic anthropologist and a member of the regional DMORT team, Tempe rushes to the scene to assist in body recovery and identification.
As bomb theories abound, Tempe soon discovers a jarring piece of evidence that raises dangerous questions—and gets her thrown from the DMORT team. Relentless in her pursuit of its significance, Tempe uncovers a shocking, multilayered tale of deceit and depravity as she probes her way into frightening territory—where someone wants her stopped in her tracks.

⭐ This is really two stories connected, in one novel. The author hits the ground running. The primary story is a plane crash. When the book begins the plane has already crashed and there is no unnecessary build up to it.Dr. Reichs, being an M.E. herself, writes in great descriptive, medical detail. Many times descriptions get somewhat boring in novels; not hers. The woman knows from personal experience what she writes about. She also does very well on the cause of the catastrophe. Having been in the airline business, I can say her description of events on the crash are spot on and plausible.Tempe Brennan M.E., protagonist, is ever professional. However, she finds false accusations fired at her. Why? Reading the book, it becomes clear. She also stumbles upon a small abandoned homestead during her crash investigation; beginning the second novel within a novel.I would have been happy if the author had kept Dr. Brennan on her typical road of realism. Instead, the author introduces a story-line which really isn’t probable at all and just does not fit the character and the book. Its “out there” and “over the top.” It seems better suited to a supernatural book than a Dr. Tempe Brennan story. This, for me, killed the book. For me, all logic ended after the source of the aircraft accident was found. I skimmed the rest.I still give this four stars due to the very well done descriptive writing and the well done character development, along with some tongue in cheek humor. Sadly, not one of my favorites due to the second half.
⭐ I always enjoy these Dr. Temperance Brennan books. I find all the books about Medical Examiners , Forensic Archeologists and Forensic Anthropologists fascinating. This has a aircraft crash and ask the work that goes into search & rescue/recovery. Plus the mysterious missing and murdered seniors.
⭐ This book by Kathy Reichs ranks among her best. Somehow I’d missed reading this book in the series and now I’m very glad to catch up. Normally, when I find a book which is brilliantly written as this, I can’t put it down. In FATAL VOYAGE the opposite was true. To prolong my reading of the story, I had read short passages only of Temperance Brennan’s journey in her pursuit of truth and justice – so great was the excitement and emotion. The story revolves around an air crash which involves Temp in a convoluted case involving the identifying of human remains and the consequences of her investigations. The mix of real-life observations, excitement, empathy and accuracy in Kathy’s writings make her a giant among storytellers and in particular, forensic scientists. A great read.
⭐ Confirming in style, murder intrigue and procedures, this one surprised me by the clear imagery of the plane crush site and the aftermath of destruction. Did not expect Reichs to have such a mastery of words, painting disaster in such a compelling fashion. Kudos!
⭐ Kathy Reich’s books are rather redundant. She always has a victim role, a golly gee did that man, woman, child, car, train, ambulance try to kill me mode, and delayed reactions to so many things which she makes so obviously ominous that I want to kill her myself. These books are a lesson in futility…..so far. I am going to skip ahead to the latest one and if she doesn’t drop the formula by then, well….its over between us forever. (Which would take her character at least 5 chapters to get).
⭐ Before buying this book I read several of the reviews. Most were positive. A few were negative about the amount of information was written about stem cells and the history of the area where this book takes place. I found that added to the book. Kathy Reichs has a great way of telling a story. She is very knowledgeable about what a medical examiner does and tells us without getting too over our heads. I did find it interesting in this book that Tempe, the main character, complained twice about always being around dead bodies and death.
⭐ This book starts out as a nice interesting story where our hero, Dr. Temperance Brennan (of Bones TV fame) happily plays with corpses torn to shreds in a commercial plane crash. Suddenly she finds herself kicked off the skeleton squad, and wonders if she is getting close to something that no one wants her to find out about. This is good reading so far. Ms Reichs writes fluently with a sense of humor, but the plot starts degenerating into, well, when I begin reading about the British painter William Hogarth and our own Benjamin Franklin indulging in satanic rituals I began to get a bit queasy. And then how does Pope Innocent III (d.1216) enter the picture. I don’t want to tell you where the story goes, but I trust you are getting some idea about a possible descent into bizarro land. There are a few other problems. The cast of Fatal Voyage is probably just a few folks shy of the number of folks in Tolstoy’s War and Peace. I finally bogged down, and quit trying to remember at least 40 different characters. Many writers have problems dealing with expository material. The author needs to get certain information across to the reader without directing her remarks directly to the reader. Ms Reichs solves this problem by dragging a large dog around with her for almost the complete novel. When she wants us to know what the skyline of Charlotte looks like she tells the dog about it, and then dog barks, raises ears, yawns or engages in some other similar return communication. When she wants us to know what she is thinking she verbalizes it to the dog.The behavior of some of the characters in this book is so unrealistic, so unbelievable that I often didn’t want to go on reading. What ever happened to the good old realistic detective story? Is it a dying genre? It sometimes seems so.
⭐ This was the first Kathy Reichs novel I’d read … and I promptly went out and bought all the rest. The night the book arrived, I stayed up until 12:15 AM finishing it – I literally could not put it down.Like the author herself, Reich’s protagonist (Tempe Brennan) is a forensic anthropologist. As this is my major, that was the first thing that was what attracted me to purchase the book in the first place. The book starts off with a bang – Brennan is investigating an airplane crash … and finds a body part that doesn’t match up with anyone on the flight’s manifest. This discovery leads her into some very complex situations, many of them life-threatening.It’s been *years* since I stayed up to finish a book the same day I obtained it … and even more since I enjoyed an author’s work so much that I went out and obtained the rest of his or her catalogue the next day.If you enjoy investigation/police procedure books, mysteries and the like, Reichs’ work is definitely for you.
⭐ This is the fourth book from Kathy Reichs I have read (reading them in order), and have found each of them to be very interesting. The plots seem the same at first glance, but are far from identical. The consistent use of a limited number of characters keeps the stories easy to follow!
⭐ I liked this book better than the previous book. I do not understand Tempe’s problems wotj Ryan, but I like having him in the books. It had an interesting conclusion.
