Description
In this second edition of Foundation Mathematics for Computer Science, John Vince has reviewed and edited the original book and written new chapters on combinatorics, probability, modular arithmetic and complex numbers. These subjects complement the existing chapters on number systems, algebra, logic, trigonometry, coordinate systems, determinants, vectors, matrices, geometric matrix transforms, differential and integral calculus. During this journey, the author touches upon more esoteric topics such as quaternions, octonions, Grassmann algebra, Barrycentric coordinates, transfinite sets and prime numbers. John Vince describes a range of mathematical topics to provide a solid foundation for an undergraduate course in computer science, starting with a review of number systems and their relevance to digital computers, and finishing with differential and integral calculus. Readers will find that the author’s visual approach will greatly improve their understanding as to why certain mathematical structures exist, together with how they are used in real-world applications. This second edition includes new, full-colour illustrations to clarify the mathematical descriptions, and in some cases, equations are also coloured to reveal vital algebraic patterns. The numerous worked examples will help consolidate the understanding of abstract mathematical concepts. Whether you intend to pursue a career in programming, scientific visualisation, artificial intelligence, systems design, or real-time computing, you should find the author’s literary style refreshingly lucid and engaging, and prepare you for more advanced texts.
User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐Great for brushing up math knowledge, for “Mathmatically-challenged” semi-retired Network Tech.
⭐I hated math in high school / college (probably because of how they are taught), books like this are amazingly useful in learning the subject in a way that works for me.This book provides a solid – and readable – introduction to a wide variety of mathematics. I’ve found that for the most part it’s “stand alone” in being able to teach material, in some isolated cases a little googling is needed to round things out (further explanation of imaginary numbers or reducto ad absurdum, which are small subsets of the larger topics / concepts) which is to be expected in a compendium.
⭐Content is good, but sold as new. Lots of underlinging and writing in it.
⭐Im an undergrad in CS but never gained firm grasp on mathematics the way it was taught in highschool. This book fixes that. What I struggled with is teachers never really explained the meaning of all of the symbols and shorthand. This book is one of the best investments Ive made. 11/10 would recommend to anyone
⭐In academic books, there is always a target audience. So I may not like the book but someone else may find it useful. Having said that, this book is more like collection of formulae and information which is cursory at best. I am not sure who is the target readers are. There are better books like Advanced Engineering Mathematics (10th Edition…) by Erwin Kreyszig is more comprehensive in nature….. with this book one would not learn much that is useful…… it would not help the reader in foundation maths and it is worthless as far as computer science is concerned…… I am sure what “visual approach” means…..I would not recommend this book to anyone
