Description
This modern approach to the subject is clearly and logically structured, and gives readers an understanding of the essence of Fourier transforms and their applications. All important aspects are included with respect to their use with optical spectroscopic data. Based on popular lectures, the authors provide the mathematical fundamentals and numerical applications which are essential in practical use. The main part of the book is dedicated to applications of FT in signal processing and spectroscopy, with IR and NIR, NMR and mass spectrometry dealt with both from a theoretical and practical point of view. Some aspects, linear prediction for example, are explained here thoroughly for the first time.

⭐This is a WONDERFUL book on the Fourier Transform. It’s nearly perfect.First of all, the author writes to an audience. The audience of this book would be senior level physics / engineering students, 1st year graduate students, or graduate students who want a better feel for the FT. The math is advanced, but neither abstract nor difficult. It is completely appropriate for the intended audience. In fact, the authors did a GREAT job at that. One comment before I move on to point two. Many books on the FT suffer from trying to be too many things to too many people. For example, trying to be an intro book but delving into the abstract nature of a transform. The main point of this book is practicality. It is neither abstract nor subtle. The author’s writing style and material is very pragmatic and straight-forward. Any (good) student of physics or engineering will immediately appreciate this.Second of all, what makes this book truly excellent are all the great pictures. I can’t think of any FT books that make as copious use of pictures. You see the input, you see the output. I’ve always wondered why more books on the subject don’t do that. The only thing not good about this book is the price. It’s ridiculous. I wonder if that has anything to do with the falling dollar. If you’re like me, you’ve learned the Fourier Transform up the wazoo. You’ve calculated the FT and the inverse transform a gazillion times in your mechanics, quantum mechanics, mathematical methods, finance, and numerical methods classes. You can derive the derivative property with your hands tied behind your back. And you even have some intuition about what the FT will look like for certain kinds of input. But you don’t really have connect at a deeper level. The gut-level intuition is lacking. Then this book is for you.But get it elsewhere. It’s not worth the $150 used price tag. It’s a great book, but it’s not THAT great.
⭐This book contains a full blown theoretical treatment of how Fourier Transforms are used in spectroscopy. No punches are pulled, its all math, all the time. However, this is not necessarily bad. There has been a crying need in this field for someone to give the full theoretical treatment to this topic, and now it has been done. What I found most useful is that concepts that I understood to be true I now know to be true because the proofs are in this book. Also, despite the math, the authors try to make the book as readable and relevant as possible. This book is not for beginners, but for anyone with some background in math and spectroscopy, it is good reading. This book is a must have reference for anyone who is serious about FTIR.
