Description

George Boole (1815-1864) is well known to mathematicians for his research and textbooks on the calculus, but his name has spread world-wide for his innovations in symbolic logic and the development and applications made since his day. The utility of “Boolean algebra” in computing has greatly increased curiosity in the nature and extent of his achievements. His work is most accessible in his two books on logic, “A mathematical analysis of logic” (1947) and “An investigation of the laws of thought” (1954). But at various times he wrote manuscript essays, especially after the publication of the second book; several were intended for a non-technical work, “The Philosophy of logic”, which he was not able to complete. This volume contains an edited selection which not only relates them to Boole’s publications and the historical context of his time, but also describes their strange history of family, followers and scholars have treid to confect an edition. The book will appeal to logicians, mathematicians and philosophers, and those interested in the histories of the corresponding subjects; and also students of the early Victorian Britain in which they were written.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐This is a terrible print-on-demand book from Birkhauser. It seems they followed Springer’s cheap production style. Since this is a digitally printed the print quality is not up to the mark. There are many photographs in this book of Boole’s, his birth place, manuscripts etc. All of them are like a scanned copy and are not sharp as you can expect from a digital Print-on-demand technology. It’s a shame that such an important book falls victim of today’s cheap quality reprints.Unlike other Birkhauser hardcover book this book is paperback glued directly to the cover. You know, the pages will fall in due time. Unfortunately, at this price with such quality it’s not worth getting. I hope the publisher comes to sense & publish either a cheap paperback edition (affordable one) or republish this book in its original form rather than “Print-on-demand”.As far as the content is concerned it’s mainly the papers that he wrote between his book ‘Mathematical analysis of logic’ to ‘Laws of thoughts’. It also includes his attempt to write a popular version of his work on logic(though its unfinished). Unless one have access to Boole’s earlier major works, one will have hard time going through this book because these are mainly papers that he left incomplete at the time of his death. Also, it’s a confusing task for the editors too because the chronological arrangement of the articles in this book are mainly the editor’s interpretation because Boole didn’t specifically wrote the date for these articles. Which makes it hard not only for the editors but also for the readers too. Read his other books first if one wants to read this otherwise it will be a futile task.
