Description
Graph Theory presents a natural, reader-friendly way to learn some of the essential ideas of graph theory starting from first principles. The format is similar to the companion text, Combinatorics: A Problem Oriented Approach also by Daniel A. Marcus, in that it combines the features of a textbook with those of a problem workbook. The material is presented through a series of approximately 360 strategically placed problems with connecting text. This is supplemented by 280 additional problems that are intended to be used as homework assignments. Concepts of graph theory are introduced, developed, and reinforced by working through leading questions posed in the problems. This problem-oriented format is intended to promote active involvement by the reader while always providing clear direction. This approach figures prominently on the presentation of proofs, which become more frequent and elaborate as the book progresses. Arguments are arranged in digestible chunks and always appear along with concrete examples to keep the readers firmly grounded in their motivation. Spanning tree algorithms, Euler paths, Hamilton paths and cycles, planar graphs, independence and covering, connections and obstructions, and vertex and edge colorings make up the core of the book. Hall’s Theorem, the Konig-Egervary Theorem, Dilworth’s Theorem and the Hungarian algorithm to the optional assignment problem, matrices, and Latin squares are also explored.–Back cover.
User’s Reviews
Editorial Reviews: Book Description A combined textbook and problem book that presents a friendly approach to graph theory while maintaining reader involvement with many exercises. About the Author Daniel A. Marcus received his PhD from Harvard University. He was a J. Willard Gibbs Instructor at Yale University from 1972 to 1974 and Professor of Mathematics at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, from 1979 to 2004.

⭐Good item but it’s kinda pricey
⭐I like it only because it helps me make an A in this class
⭐Excellent book.
⭐This book is truly amazing and unfortunately I will never be able not to understate the impact this book has on my learning of graphs.I have tried many other books for this amazing subject. Sadly, all books I tried have the power to transform this beautiful subject into dull, boring formalism. This book stops the tradition of regurgitating theorems and proofs about things they don`t even try to represent visually. The Marcus` book don`t throw anything at you. Instead, it lets you develop and explore by yourself by making questions that arouse your brain to “play the graph game” by taking a pencil, crayons and start trying. First it let you make silly mistakes by letting you try doing stuff with brute force. Then, the author gives mini-clues which develops your vision into a more clever way of doing stuff, and only then he gives you the theorem about it. At this point, the theorems sounds more than obvious, because you almost developed them by “yourself” (thats how it feels, of course, because the authors guidance feels so natural). When I was reading this book, I constantly had memories of me as a 17 year old trying to learn math for the Math Olympiads via extra textbooks which let you develop theories instead of having them regurgitated in your mouth. It was a very romantic time I had with math, and this time is happily coming back to me again :)I don’t remember where I read about this book, but I am glad I did!
