User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐The review by Charles aligns well with my own views of both this book and Murakami’s works in general, so I won’t repeat those comments. My favorite Murakami has always been A Wild Sheep Chase and I was delighted to learn about Hear the Wind Sing and Pinball, and to find them available in import editions. The style is very much early Murakami, so I recommend it to those who enjoy Wild Sheep up through Wind-up Bird Chronicle. If you haven’t read those, they are better places to start. The present text is very much style-driven, not plot-driven — relatively little happens as it meanders through daily like of the narrator. As other reviews note, the book is a thin, pocket-sized text with extensive English-idiom-to-Japanese translation notes in the back, for Japanese readers learning English. So the “words per dollar” count is quite low, and it feels like a book that should cost more like $5 (as it does in Japan). This was offset somewhat by the novelty of an import edition, and beautiful Japanese gift wrapping that the seller (presumably) added to it.My review ends up at 3 stars for two reasons: (1) as literature, the book is good, fun, and interesting, but not truly great, so it loses 1 star there. (2) the import is certainly expensive relative to the length and print quality, so it loses 1 star for value. In short, if you’re an early Murakami fan, it’s a fun read although expensive. If you’re just starting with Murakami, start with
⭐. Enjoy!
⭐In terms of storytelling, Hear the Wind Sing is relatively pointless. I can see why Murakami has suppressed any attempts at rereleasing it in English. Publishing it at this point in his career would throw people off if they weren’t aware it’s his first work.Nevertheless, it’s not totally worthless. It’s saved by Murakami’s charisma as well as his simple prose style. For some reason, he just strikes the right chords, hits the right nerves. Expect ennui and existentialism, beer and and baseball, music and girls. Lacking the magical realism and urban fantasy for which he’s famous, this reads like a prologue to Norwegian Wood. With a Carver-esque style, it’s obviously not too much work to read.According to Wikipedia this won the Gunzo Literature Prize and was nominated for the Akutagawa Prize and the Noma Literary Newcomer’s Prize. This is interesting. Translated into English, I don’t consider this a prize-worthy novella. I’m curious as to whether there’s something lost in translation, something more redeeming about the original Japanese text. I suspect it’s more likely that, when it was published in July 1979 in Japan, it was actually quite “original” compared to the novels of the Japanese literary establishment. What reads like something pretty ordinary to me in 2014 was potentially much more radical, especially because of its evident and plentiful Western influences.
⭐It’s shorter than I expected, (the book itself is about 5 x 3 inches, so good for a pocket, I suppose), but it’s good Murakami. Offers some back-story on characters from Sheep Chase and Dance, and while nothing really mystical or surprising happens it’s interesting to read through earlier work by the author. It struck me that his protagonist, who is the same as in Sheep Chase and Dance, is, like the author, much younger and with very different priorities than in the later works. He also has a different outlook, seems more human and vulnerable (not quite as Sam Spade as the author’s later characters) which again gives the reader an interesting glimpse of the author as a younger, less experienced author. The translation’s not as great as his newer stuff, which I’ve read he translates himself, but hey, it’s “new-to-me” Murakami, so who the hell’s complaining?
⭐This is typical Murakami in his ability to describe everyday events in a manner that is totally engaging. The characters are familiar to anyone who has read “Wild Sheep Chase”. The biggest difference is that there’s no fantastic element. Some good character studies of both principal characters. This book hasn’t generally been published in the West and this edition is obviously for Japanese speakers who want to read in English because there are translation notes at the back and all the formal stuff is in Japanese.
⭐As many Murakami’s readers are aware, this is the first book he wrote and is where the rat’s trilogy starts, the story is short beautifully wrote, the scenarios described, and the recurring themes of personal relationships and loss are present, as well as the aspirations and beliefs of two close friends in their students age. As Murakami usually states “it’s not his finest work”, however is an enjoyable one
⭐It’s a simple tale, but beautiful and worthwhile. A quick read. If you’re a big Murakami fan, get it and enjoy, but expect something like a simpler “Wild Sheep Chase”. Nothing like his more recent books. If you’re not a Murakami fan, get on board. This is a good place to start. It reads like a comfortable summer day with a warm breeze.
⭐Loved reading the first story in the Trilogy of the Rat!
⭐great
⭐A good book, but definitely not Murakami’s best work. But it’s interesting to see where and how he started his career.
⭐Not found.
⭐This item is quite good. I like this book and Haruki.
⭐This is Murakami’s first novel. I read it after reading some of his newer ones. after reading it, I understood why he does not like this novel to be marketed in the Western World. It simply did not make sense at all.Sure, Murakami novels hardly make sense, and its magic is found in this very fact. but this novel lacks the magical poetry and story telling of the later novels. I caution a Murakami beginner to start with this as it might not encourage you to read his other works. This is perhaps for someone who wants to complete his Murakami selection and for the curious on how his style evolved through the years. But definitely not one of his finer books.
