Description

This fascinating book provides an accessible and up-to-date overview of modern cosmology. In particular, the book discusses the formation of the Cosmic Microwave Background and the evolution of large scale structures in the universe, the distribution of galaxies and clusters of galaxies on very large distance scales.Following a brief introduction, the authors describe the scientific method – how science is done. They then discuss observational cosmology, the instruments and what observations can be done with them, and what is derived from those observations. After discussing the constituents of the universe, including dark matter and dark energy, the authors provide an outline of the forces that shape the universe, with particular emphasis on gravitation. Following this, the reader is taken on a journey in time from the present day back to the very beginning of the universe, a period called inflation, which sets the initial conditions for the subsequent evolution of the universe. The book ends with a brief chapter on what lies beyond.Written by two experts, the book is aimed at the interested lay-person with little or no physics background, but an interest in modern cosmology.

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐The book offers a user friendly, easy to read introduction to the subject of Cosmology. Many books on similar subjects tell you that there will be minimal reliance upon the relevant mathematics and then from time to time, dive into an equation that can leave you struggling. This book does not rely on high level mathematical knowledge but neither is it a dumbed-down coffee table book, designed for display. This is a handy toolbox of concepts that can help to interpret other books written with less detail. It focuses on how the work is done, the advances in our knowledge of the universe and is a pleasure to read .

⭐I don’t know what sort of friends the authors are trying to explain the universe to, but my friends (largely graduates and pretty intelligent sorts) are most likely to be completely out the their depth – as was I. Mind-boggling. May be it will start to make sense n a second or third reading.

⭐The authors (one of whom supervised me for my MSc) are experts in the field. The book provides a relatively non-technical guide to the overview and details of cosmology, which should be accessible to anyone with basic knowledge of popular science. Its well-written text takes the reader further into the subject than most popular science books, and is a great introduction to the subject for a reader who wants to get a clear picture of what cosmologists think about to help understand the Universe.

⭐An excellent book if you are interested in an overview of the current status of cosmology, some chapters are a bit technical but there are no equations. In general a very interesting reading.

⭐A thorough introduction to modern cosmology
