User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐Half of this book is about Greenstone digital library software. If that’s what you want to use for your digital library, that’s fine. Otherwise, it would be nice if you could just buy half of the book. The first half is pretty good. It walks you through some of the important issues for creating a digital library. I had access to a digital copy of this book. Somewhat ironically, I bought the print version anyway, not realizing that half of the book is useless. In order to create a digital library, you’re just going to have to dive in with the software. I highly recommend Omeka for this. It is free. It requires some familiarity with computers (you should know what the command line is, at least). It can be a pain to install, and it’s difficult to make it pretty. Once you get it installed, though, it’s a piece of cake to use, and it’s an excellent choice for creating your first digital collection and making it available. If you’re not very computer savvy, just ask your systems admin friend or acquaintance to set it up for you (you can barter for her help by digitizing and OCR-ing her grandparents’ postcard collection or something).
⭐There is some really good information in this book regarding the fundamentals, history, theory and practice of building digital libraries. I’d recommend the first half of the book to anybody. However, the second half of the book is burdened by heavy reliance on the Greenstone software package: a gnarly hack of Perl, C++ and Java code which should be relegated to the software dustbin. It’s a shame when quality guidance is burdened by bad software.
