Description

Fun puzzles that use physics to explore the wonders of everyday lifePhysics can explain many of the things that we commonly encounter. It can tell us why the night is dark, what causes the tides, and even how best to catch a baseball. With In Praise of Simple Physics, popular math and science writer Paul Nahin presents a plethora of situations that explore the science and math behind the wonders of everyday life. Roaming through a diverse range of puzzles, he illustrates how physics shows us ways to wring more energy from renewable sources, to measure the gravity in our car garages, to figure out which of three light switches in the basement controls the light bulb in the attic, and much, much more. How fast can you travel from London to Paris? How do scientists calculate the energy of an atomic bomb explosion? How do you kick a football so it stays in the air and goes a long way downfield? Nahin begins with simpler problems and progresses to more challenging questions, and his entertaining, accessible, and scientifically and mathematically informed explanations are all punctuated by his trademark humor. Readers are presumed to have some background in beginning differential and integral calculus. Whether you simply have a personal interest in physics’ influence in the world or you’re an engineering and science student who wants to gain more physics know-how, this book has an intriguing scenario for you.In Praise of Simple Physics proves that if we look carefully at the world around us, physics has answers for the most astonishing day-to-day occurrences.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐The physics concepts covered are very interesting, but the math required to fully comprehend each one is far from “simple.” I thought this might be of interest to my grandson, age 14, but the math is above his grade level – and he’s a bright kid.

⭐Paul Nahin has a knack of writing about science that is engaging for all including, or should I say especially, those with little mathematical training. His mathematical expansions include all steps to get from point A to point B, and so can be considered a hidden course in mathematics but with the added thrill of it applies to real life. Nothing to be intimidated about this book, but should be read by the curious who want to understand more about our world.

⭐This is a nice book to read if you like physics problems and are rusty on how to do them. The author covers several types of “basic” physics problems. You need to have a decent grasp of trig, algebra, and first year calculus. This is not a book that is going to teach physics principles from the ground up, it is about showing you how to apply the principles to solve problems. If you don’t have a decent undergrad math background and some physics classes in the past, this will be difficult for you to follow.I enjoyed reading this book, the author writes interesting books for those interested in how problems are solved using mathematics and physics.

⭐I love these type of books which present problems anyone might consider, and demonstrate how mathematics can be used to solve these problems. There is lots of math, more than other books of similar genre.

⭐I fail to see who may enjoy reading this book. I fail to see who may enjoy reading this book. Those who have background in Physics will probably judge (most of) the book as trivial, while those who have no background in Physics will face difficulty reading the many formulas based on calculus. while those who have no background in Physics will face difficulty reading the many formulas based on calculus.

⭐Extraordinary book. Very amenable to grasp physical concepts. Should be used to teach at schools. Congrats to the author from Lima, Peru. As a mechanical engineer I enjoyed reading it a lot.

⭐I always buy any book by Nahin. All his past books have been great, just the right combo of history and theory and worked out examples. Highly recommended.

⭐Excellent book! Many nice examples from everyday life solved with simple maths and physics. Although not necessary, a working familiarity with 1st year university physics/maths, would help appreciate the beauty of this book. Also, the historical insights are very interestingMy only note would be that the author is a bit verbose at points for my taste, but not a problem overall.Totally recommend it. I’ve already ordered some other book from the series!

⭐Incroyable Paul Nahin ! Ses nombreux livres sont tous extraordinaires. “Simple maths, physics , stories and the like”. Très touche-à-tout, toujours intelligent, stimulant, inspirant et… toujours drôle. Auteur très attachant, sérieux aussi et qui ne se prend pas la tête. Bonne lecture . PR.
