Description

This is the third, substantially revised edition of this important monograph. The book is concerned with Kac–Moody algebras, a particular class of infinite-dimensional Lie algebras, and their representations. It is based on courses given over a number of years at MIT and in Paris, and is sufficiently self-contained and detailed to be used for graduate courses. Each chapter begins with a motivating discussion and ends with a collection of exercises, with hints to the more challenging problems.

⭐10年前 Witten の美しい論文を読んだ．指標のmodular変換 が謎として残った．Atiyash-Patodi-Singer（これには D.B.Natan の小粋な抜け道がある）を学んでもダメ．共形場や量子群に逃げてもダメ．全ての道は Weyl-Kacの指標公式 を指している．(*)私は意を決して本書を紐解いた．読むという表現はこの本には値しない．頁を繰る度に想起する念は？の一文字に尽きる．しかし丸一日考え抜くと確かに腑に落ちる．暗号解読の日々が延々352頁３ヶ月半に渡って続き，TeXで作成した読書ノートは44頁に達した．今最も一般的な枠組みで 指標公式，modular変換のS行列，Freudenthal-deVriesの公式 を手に入れ感無量である．無限次元リー環 の分類に経済数学の初歩（Farkasの補題・Gordanの定理）が決め手となるのも面白かった．第３版を迎える本書もまだ細かな誤植が70箇所程残されている．私の誤解でなければ，被害甚大であろう箇所はp.134の誤 t^(mh/r) → 正 (.)^m/r×t^h ，補題9.10(iv)の誤 Q_+ → 正 Q_± ．系9.10は削除しp.179↑l.3の ＞ は ≠ に変更する．また，Casimir元 を理解する上でKeyとなる演習2.8のヒントは Weyl鏡映．Poincare-Birkhoff-Witt はブルバキ，Weyl完全可約性 は「絶対カシミール元」A.1を参照．(*) もう一つの重要な鍵 Fierz恒等式 は，Kauffman の Topics in combinatorial knot theory に見いだせる．＜追記＞このレビューを記して８年が経つ．最近になって，本書と河野俊丈「場の理論とトポロジー」を読んだ後は，大変自然に原田耕一郎「モンスター」へと話が流れて行くことに気が付いた．Glauberman : A New Look at the Feit-Thompson Odd Order Theoremで，第１章さえ乗り切れば大いに楽しめるであろう。（この優れたレビューの存在が広く知られていれば、この本はきっと絶版にならなかったろう。）有限群については，宮本雅彦 :「有限群」村の冒険 という素敵なガイドブックがある．もっともこの方面に深入りすると，加藤和也：数論への招待 を皮切りにそちらの世界へ引きずり込まれてしまうかもしれない ( ∵ Galois 群 と ideal 類群 の甘美な誘惑 ) ．スーパー リー環 についても，幸い 脇本実 の心強い本がある．しかし，評者のように E8(8) 統一場（ マジック・スクウェアー の末尾を参照 ）の構成まで終えて８年ぶりにこの世界に戻ってきた日には …… すっかり浦島太郎さ！＜付記＞試しに 読書ノート の texファイル をコメント欄にコピーしてみたのだが、（当然のことながら）程なくして削除されてしまった。
