Description
This book, first published in 2007, is an introductory textbook on quantum field theory in gravitational backgrounds intended for undergraduate and beginning graduate students in the fields of theoretical astrophysics, cosmology, particle physics, and string theory. The book covers the basic (but essential) material of quantization of fields in an expanding universe and quantum fluctuations in inflationary spacetime. It also contains a detailed explanation of the Casimir, Unruh, and Hawking effects, and introduces the method of effective action used for calculating the back-reaction of quantum systems on a classical external gravitational field. The broad scope of the material covered will provide the reader with a thorough perspective of the subject. Every major result is derived from first principles and thoroughly explained. The book is self-contained and assumes only a basic knowledge of general relativity. Exercises with detailed solutions are provided throughout the book.

⭐I really love this book, if you want to understand the Hawking radiation, you should start from this book. The book contains the minimum of quantum field theory that you need to understand the topics, so if you have the basic knowledge in quantum mechanics and general relativity, you can try this book
⭐It’s clear, concise and has an easy flow. All the basic ingredients are there – and some topics that are very popular such as the Unruh effect, Hawking radiation, and the Casimir effect.
⭐The book delivers exactly what it says it will. That is, an introduction to QFT in classical curved spactimes. The exercises are worked out in the back of the book. Hence, great way for an independent researcher, like myself, to get a taste of these otherwise very confusing concepts.
⭐I am not sure if the author really understands physics. My goodness…
⭐This is a great book! Anybody interested in QFT should read at least the first part. The transition from quantum mechanics to quantum field theory is impeccable, it finally gave me the feeling that I had understood what quantum field theory was all about, although I’ve read several introductions to the subject. Moreover, the chapters are full of very useful remarks, and there is a great emphasis on physical meaning. There are many good examples and exercices (with corrections at the end). The physical models are simple, but there are almost no missing steps in the calculations. The authors have obviously tested their textbook on many students before publishing anything, and this is all for the best!If you want to go further, you can complement this book with Birrel and Davies, or read the many good reviews published in the litterature.
⭐If you wanna learn about the topic and you are not an expert Mathematics Cambridge proffesor this book will hit that sweet spot.It starts with a review of quantum mechanics. Yeah, I know, you heard well, you will actually feel good with yourself for like 50pgs in and you will learn those fine details that your lecturer missed in class. You will be amazed.Next up? Fancy some easy QFT? You named it! The guy does it again, he is like that super smart and kind guy in your class who can explain you like 15 lectures in 1h. Amazing. And now, while you rush for your wallet, let me tell you how perfect the gravity + qft is… Wanted cosmological backgrounds? Done. Unruh? Casimir? Hawking effect? Come on man, hit me with something harder…. This book is outstanding. Finally, while you authorize the payment, let me tell you something it can get even personal, emotional, some have even felt a bit turned on… This book has exercises with WORKED solutions. Now, while you chain yourself to the walls of your room cause you can’t wait any longer for the book to arrive let me tell you something. Be proud of yourself. You just purchased the Rolex of books, the Ferrari of GR + QFT… You will have to get used to having people stare at you will you pass by in the street. You will almost read their minds: “Son, this guys owns a Mukhanov & Winitzki, take example of this exceptional man”Keep on shinning. You are a legend now.
⭐Perfect state and delivered in time.10/10. I need to write 15 words more to be allowed to send this.
