⭐Don’t let the fact that this is a reprint of a 1989 text put you off it. Firstly, 1989 is not that far away, to some of us. More importantly, the topic of this book is not subject to obsolescence like computer memory is to Moore’s Law. It refers to a mathematical technique of analysing and designing optical systems.By using the OTF, you can often decompose the description of an optical system into the equivalent of a product of transfer functions. The modularity lets you understand each corresponding component, and possibly design it, if the latter is your aim. This system/problem decomposition enables the design of highly complex systems.Note that the book lacks exercises. It’s not optimised as a text for an undergrad optics course. More likely, it’s better for the grad student or optics researcher. Along these lines, each chapter furnishes pertinent references to journal papers.The book also describes both analytic and numerical ways to find OTFs. For the latter, the power of a typical desktop computer is now sufficient to handle many complex optical systems.
