Description
Only John’s Gospel says that Jesus was crucified as Jesus the Nazorean, the King of the Jews. Jesus was the keeper of the ways of the first temple in Jerusalem. These had almost been lost when the Moses traditions came to dominate in the second-temple period. Jesus’ mission was to restore the ways of the original temple. He entrusted his visions to John the Elder, a priestly disciple in Jerusalem, and John compiled them into the Book of Revelation. Later, John wrote his Gospel to show how the visions had been fulfilled. The background to the Fourth Gospel is temple tradition. John shows how Jesus’ debates with the Jews centred on the great difference between the world of the second temple and the world of the priest-kings of the first temple from which Christianity emerged. The Johannine community were the Hebrew disciples of Jesus who saw themselves as the true high priesthood restored.
User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐Barker continues to explore the fruitful idea that the first Christians were heirs to the pre-Deuteronomic, priestly, temple-rooted, royal liturgy and theology. Jesus was recognized by those who were waiting for him as the Davidic King, who was the Son of the Lord because he incarnated the Lord, whose ministry began with an ascension and necessarily ended with the sacrifice of his own flesh and blood. John writes to identify Jesus as the King and the Lord, and to show what the purpose of Jesus’ ministry was: to restore the submerged faith of the first temple, and replace the Mosaic feast of the Passover with the great and final Day of Atonement. John was not late or Hellenized, but the best and most contemporary witness to the mind and mission of the Lord.
⭐You want to really learn some things? Read this book!!!
⭐Bought for my husband….just received today and he can’t put it down
⭐A remarkable piece of scholarship with insights on the meaning of various texts in the New testament especially Revelation.
⭐In depth read; must take time to understand and ponder. I have most of her books. She has great knowledge of Bible events.
⭐A book of the century!
⭐She is one of my favorite authors!
⭐Incredible research !!!
⭐This book turns the conventional interpretation of the life of Christ on its head. It is massively scholarly, and very convincing. After reading this two things happen: it answers (often unconventionally) all those questions that throw doubt on the usual Jesus story; and it means that one can never approach the Bible or the Church’s liturgy in the same mind again. Any reader needs to approach openly; and to be prepared to re-visit everything that he/she has ever learned or been taught about the events of Christianity. This is NOT a book about faith or non-faith – it is a book about re-interpreting what one thought one knew. A brilliant read but for the mature only.
⭐Brilliant Margaret Barker as usual. I have found one doesn’t need to own all of her books, as there is significant overlap, but this is certainly a must for those interested in the Jewish roots of Christian belief and practice, and the Judaism as it was lived in the inter-testamental period.
⭐Came super punctual an as expected
⭐Magnificent study of John bringing a life of scholarship to bear and adding real value, and as always stressing the continuity of Temple values and thinking beneath the surface of the New Testament. Even for Margaret Barker readers this substantial book is worth reading.
⭐Lots of new ideas, making a great deal of sense. If all clergy etc read this, and other books of M Barker, we could overcome the Calvinist/Catholic divide.
