Description

In Xanadu did Kubla KhanA stately pleasure dome decreeKublai Khan lives on in the popular imagination thanks to these two lines of poetry by Coleridge. But the true story behind this legend is even more fantastic than the poem would have us believe. He inherited the second largest land empire in history from his grandfather, Genghis Khan. He promptly set about extending this into the biggest empire the world has ever seen, extending his rule from China to Iraq, from Siberia to Afghanistan. His personal domain covered sixty-percent of all Asia, and one-fifth of the world’s land area. The West first learnt of this great Khan through the reports of Marco Polo. Kublai had not been born to rule, but had clawed his way to leadership, achieving power only in his 40s. He had inherited Genghis Khan’s great dream of world domination. But unlike his grandfather he saw China and not Mongolia as the key to controlling power and turned Genghis’ unwieldy empire into a federation. Using China’s great wealth, coupled with his shrewd and subtle government, he created an empire that was the greatest since the fall of Rome, and shaped the modern world as we know it today. He gave China its modern-day borders and his legacy is that country’s resurgence, and the superpower China of tomorrow.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐I will read the rest of his books very informative . Very interesting time period have always been interested in the mongols

⭐I am only half way through but read the book every chance I get, it is so much better than the usual rote about that era and Genghis Khan. I actually had never followed up on Kublai but saw a laudatory mention of John Man in the Introduction to Defending Heaven, and since the book was on Kindle, I bought it. Happy I did, and looking forward to reading more books by Man.Finished and loved it. Now have started his book on Attila and I feel like I have hit a mother lode. Kudos.

⭐I was intrigued to learn more about the origins of the Yuan dynasty and came across this book, which was the first I had read by John Man. His writing is engaging, and he has a knack of following exactly the details I’d like to know more about without going on forever. I was so impressed that I went out and got several other Man books!

⭐I’m still currently reading the book. I find it very entertaining and and enlightening to a period of history which I’m very interested in. Kublai Khan truly transformed the world and controlled half of the world’s population. Not too much today is known about his accomplishments and his grandfather Genghis Khan uniting most of Asia. The author does a great job in his description and analogies of many of the events that occurred. I am very happy with the purchase and the read.

⭐Kublai Khan by John Man is interesting and well written. I recommend this book. Informative.

⭐Very well written and researched. Excellent history book.

⭐Very boring and hard to read.

⭐Great Read

⭐Very happy with this book, and the seller (laywood3). Will take a while to get through it, but it is well written, clear and concise – John Man being a very good author, in my humble opinion. Facts are laid out in front of you and you are there in the midst of it all. I love these sort of historical books….brilliant!Highly recommended.I do hope this review is sufficient for you….I did write a more in-depth review, but it was not accepted by Amazon – absolutely no idea why not! Anyway, Good Luck with your purchase…

⭐This detailed account brings together a hugely complex family and Empire! A scholarly work, with fascinating personal insight! Thank you John.

⭐Extremely informative and interesting book on a subject that I, like most westerners only knew from a distance of time and space. A great companion for anyone wishing to read and learn about an ‘alternative’ history of the world during the Middle Ages. Truly fascinating.

⭐a good book that sheds light on the history of a united China, which started when Ghenkis Khan conquered half of the country then Kublai conquered the rest.

⭐Almost too much info ! Love it .
