⭐Steiner’s eloquent lament challenges the reader to face the devastating fact that a glorious and rich culture did not prevent the rise of the Third Reich and its subsequent atrocities. Our notions of a liberal democracy and the old-fashioned grand notion of a liberal education did not give Germans the ability to resist the Nazis with strength and resolve. This book will haunt you if you read it with care. One of the most powerful things Steiner lays before his reader (and this is a very rough paraphrase) is that we now know that people listened to Brahms and Schubert in the evenings and went to their work at the camps during the day. That chilling fact and Steiner’s exploration of the meaning of it has stayed with me for twenty years. Surely there is a profound warning here as well, if only we are perceptive enough to see.
