Description
A straightforward guide to logic conceptsLogic concepts are more mainstream than you may realize. There’s logic every place you look and in almost everything you do, from deciding which shirt to buy to asking your boss for a raise, and even to watching television, where themes of such shows as CSI and Numbers incorporate a variety of logistical studies. Logic For Dummies explains a vast array of logical concepts and processes in easy-to-understand language that make everything clear to you, whether you’re a college student of a student of life. You’ll find out about: Formal LogicSyllogismsConstructing proofs and refutationsPropositional and predicate logicModal and fuzzy logicSymbolic logicDeductive and inductive reasoningLogic For Dummies tracks an introductory logic course at the college level. Concrete, real-world examples help you understand each concept you encounter, while fully worked out proofs and fun logic problems encourage you students to apply what you’ve learned.

He has earned his living for many years writing vast quantities of logic puzzles, a hefty chunk of software documentation, and the occasional book or film review. Along the way, he’s also paid a few bills doing housecleaning, decorative painting, and (for ten hours) retail sales. He likes writing best, though. Read more
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐This book effectively explains how to reduce logical expressions to formulaic equations called “sentential logic”, but it’s not for beginners or dummies. It also left out any meaningful instruction about identifying logical fallacies, which is what I was looking for when purchasing the book.
⭐I love these books I teach philosophy, I use this book, critical thinking, and philosophy for dummies to introduce my students to the methods and Ideas of directed thought, and the wonder, and power of Wisdom. I recommend to anyone that would like to expand understanding of self, reason, and evidence.
⭐Like the other reviewers said, this text has got a fair amount of errors. But I don’t think they’re majorly significant. In fact, if you’re paying attention you’ll catch on to them pretty quickly and a quick pencil scratch-off and write-in and you’re all set again. I don’t have any prior knowledge in logic so I can’t really say how comprehensive this book is but it covers what I wanted it to do: to formally present, test and prove logically statements. It’s got page fulls of examples and basic form types so you’ll be able to manipulate all your real life logical problems with ease. Plus, cover up the answers and you’ve got a handy workbook as well. Not a bad investment for the home-study logician like myself.
⭐A great introductory learning tool for logic, covering a diverse range of logic study, from Mathematical, Computational, and Philosophical concepts of logic (all intertwined as the book progresses). This book helped me a lot in my computer science and math courses in college, though I will say that I wish it came with an excercise book or some exercises to check your understanding of the material.
⭐This is a most amazing book. It guides the neophyte step by step into the complexities of symbolic logic , and it really teaches you what it is all about. I’ve gone through many other so called “introductions” to logic, which compared to this, do not meet one’s expectations. I believe this books is as good for anyone new to the subject as for those with advanced knowledge.
⭐Clear and easy to understand. I haven’t been able to put the book down. Thank You.
⭐Cuts right to the point. Easy to use and cuts out all the annoying BS.
⭐Yes, it does have typos but they are easy to correct. It is not perfect but it is the best introduction for the novice I have found.
⭐I bought this book as I’m doing a Logic module as part of my philosophy degree, and the textbook we were given is so complicated, I wasn’t understanding the work. Logic for Dummies is brilliant, because it sets everything out nice and clearly, and had me understanding some of the basics that more complicated books often forget. I managed to read the first two chapters without my attention wavering, and I would highly recommend this to anyone studying Logic and struggling with their course books. The only thing I would say, is that there are no practice puzzles, so I have to use two textbooks to get the full use out of the module. But other than that, it’s great!
⭐As expected
⭐I bought this course to supplement an elementary formal logic course in University. It hasn’t failed me yet. There doesn’t exist much in terms of great textbooks as the subject is a niche topic covered by (typically) philosophy departments. Only truly required for Philosophy majors (and maybe Math/Computer Science/Engineering depending on school) there really isn’t “money” to be made in writing a great textbook for a subject not taken by everyone (See Economic textbooks, there’s probably more than the world needs but that is a cash cow).Anyways; The book covers1) Translations in sentenial logic2) Translations in predicate logic3) Proofs (Lemmon System)4) Advanced proofs in the predicate system (Lemmon)5) Branching and logic treesAll in concise and easy to read dummies format. Considering my class textbook is $150 and reads like a 15th century Vatican text, this was a god-send (no pun intended). You could use this book and Google to learn logic by yourself actually. This book covers anything needed except for extreme formal logic theory (Maximal Sets, subset theorems, null set theorem, etc)
⭐Great product, exactly as described, packed well shipped lightening fast and arrived safely; Thank you!!!
