User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐There is no path to “insert thing”… “insert thing” is the path. Mastery of a thing is a fleeting aspect of our instant gratification lives in 2023. Hard truths perhaps, but truths nonetheless.

⭐It seems a lot of this book was from the perspective of martial arts. I am unfamiliar with martial arts myself, so there was perhaps a lot that went over my head in that regard. But there are also some really good moments that I learned from. I’m not sure I could confidently say one could master some thing from this book but it definitely is a great start.

⭐Mastery has given me tools to never give up.Learning never stops. If you want to succeed this book will give examples and the tools.I have learned so much from George Leonard and I can now see what I have to do to achieve my ambitions. I have read this book during lockdown a time where I had time to reminisce about the past and where I went wrong. The one thing I discovered was that I never listened to myself instead of other people who telling me to go in directions that left me completely miserable. For the first time in my life this book mastery has taught me to finally do the things I am strong and passionate about.Read this book and I hope you succeed and do something great.I would also like to recommend the following books:Rich Dad’s CASHFLOW Quadrant: Rich Dad’s Guide to Financial Freedom Robert KiyosakiBreaking the Habit of Being Yourself: How to Lose Your Mind and Create a New One Dr Joe DispanzaThe Chimp Paradox: The Acclaimed Mind Management Programme to Help You Achieve Success, Confidence and Happiness Professor Steve Peters

⭐When you are fortunate enough to stumble across true wisdom, you may find it has a few recognizable characteristics:1) It is presented with exceptional clarity, often with sparing use of words.2) The concepts or ideas presented are simple at first glance, but have profound implications hidden below the surface.3) Only a minority will truly appreciate and benefit from the wisdom presented. The majority will either shrug it off, ridicule it, misapply it, or flat out miss the point entirely. This book contains valuable wisdom… and you don’t have to be a fan of eastern religion, aikido, or west coast liberalism to appreciate George Leonard’s observations. (Book jackets and chapter headings often show the heavy hand of publishing-house salesmen; in the name of marketing they tend to inflate claims, stamp out nuance, and shout needlessly at a stereotyped target audience.)This book won’t change your life, of course. Only you can do that. If you expect to walk away with some new power or magical understanding that you didn’t have to earn, you’ll be sorely disappointed (see wisdom characteristic #3 above). But the main idea that Leonard presents here, and the advice he gives regarding it, is worth taking very seriously and pondering in depth. Like most books that center around a powerful idea, the content weakens when Leonard strays from the main focus. But he strays little, and the main focus remains extremely valuable. This is not really a self-help book; nor is it really a motivational book. (Perhaps that is why I like it.) Leonard’s goal is more to explain and to guide than to motivate. To stay on the path of mastery he describes, the passion must be cultivated separately (or already be in place). In other words, Mastery will not help you do better at your job if you are only working to bring home a paycheck; it will not help you improve in the hobby / pastime of your choice if it is just “something to do on weekends.” Books like this offer clues as to how passionate effort can best be directed. But without passion, the magic doesn’t work. If you don’t have at least one area, any area, where your motivation is in some part excellence for its own sake, then pass this one by. (Or better yet, find something excellent to get excited about!)As an investor and a trader, I would recommend this book to all who take their craft seriously. If you are already on the path, Mastery could help clarify an understanding that has been in the back of your mind all along.

⭐Mastery: The Keys to Success and Long-Term Fulfillmentby George LeonardDan John mentions this book in several places, so I figured it was probably worth checking out.Turns out that it is. Not a big shock, really.Leonard approaches the question of mastery from his perspective as a long-time practitioner of Aikido, but his insights into the quest for mastery are applicable to any endeavor. Leonard begins the book by describing three mindsets that he considers incompatible with mastery: the dabbler, the hacker, and the obsessive. He then lays out his five keys to mastery, detailing each one and how to approach it. Finally, he wraps up with some chapters on preparing for the journey of mastery. It’s a concise little book, but there is a lot of wisdom in here. The section on the dabbler, hacker, and obsessive are useful filtering tools, both for recognizing those behaviors in myself, and in people who train with me. The five keys to mastery, likewise, are pretty good sign posts, and a couple of them served as useful reminders of things I knew, but forgot again.I confess I didn’t love some of the “tools for the journey”, as a lot of them were rehashed Aikido demonstrations like the “unbendable arm” (or the splayed fingers drill from the PDR system), and a few other things. I suppose if your goal is mastering Aikido, they have their use, but I’m not convinced that everyone needs to experience these drills.Still, if you’re looking for a way to focus on your goals, this is a good place to start. Lot of useful concepts in here.

⭐I cannot praise this book highly enough. It was recommended almost as an aside in a blog post I read. It offers a penetrating critique of modern culture and its obsession with quick-fixes and instant solutions. Instead it offers another understanding of success based upon ancient traditions found both in the West and the East – the idea of the Journey to Mastery. Full of insights on what mastery is and isn’t, how to get there, what can get in the way (and how to overcome the common barriers), it is both practical and well written. It is applicable to anything from tennis to marriage and from the classroom to the boardroom. Best book I’ve read so far this year.

⭐This book was big help for me when your stuck in you life and don’t know were your going

⭐Brilliant. Absorb it and learn.

⭐Honest, real and so easy to read. I read the whole thing over an italian meal while working away. Are you a dabbler, a hacker or an obsessive? I worked out straight away that I was a dabbler and it has helped informed my thinking about quite a few areas. Very realistic indeed. If you are serious about mastery a good buy.

⭐One of my all-time favourite books, this book is one of the most undervalued books I have ever read. Mastery should be in every home and library of any successful person.
