Description

Since its original publication in 1969, Mathematics for Engineers and Scientists has built a solid foundation in mathematics for legions of undergraduate science and engineering students. It continues to do so, but as the influence of computers has grown and syllabi have evolved, once again the time has come for a new edition.Thoroughly revised to meet the needs of today’s curricula, Mathematics for Engineers and Scientists, Sixth Edition covers all of the topics typically introduced to first- or second-year engineering students, from number systems, functions, and vectors to series, differential equations, and numerical analysis. Among the most significant revisions to this edition are:Simplified presentation of many topics and expanded explanations that further ease the comprehension of incoming engineering studentsA new chapter on double integralsMany more exercises, applications, and worked examplesA new chapter introducing the MATLAB and Maple software packagesAlthough designed as a textbook with problem sets in each chapter and selected answers at the end of the book, Mathematics for Engineers and Scientists, Sixth Edition serves equally well as a supplemental text and for self-study. The author strongly encourages readers to make use of computer algebra software, to experiment with it, and to learn more about mathematical functions and the operations that it can perform.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐I found this to be a good reference for areas where I am rusty. It’s explanations are too short and based on a users level of expertise that would make it too hard to learn a new area from this book, but its a great single volume reference.

⭐Excellent item,

⭐Awesome!!!!!

⭐Starts out with a high-school algebra and trigonometry refresher before covering most of the fundamental college mathematics – check out its Table of Content. This book can be quite useful for quick reviews and _light_ references/look-ups for those with a casual interest.I seriously doubt if this book can be used for learning any of the core areas for the first time. The descriptions are typically terse and the coverage, not too deep.Note: if you’re more than half-serious about your math, you will no doubt require separate books on Linear Algebra and Matrices, Differential Equations, and Probability and Statistics.Negatives — and why I don’t give it 4 stars:* There are numerous typos (I have marked probably 100+ corrections within about 80% of the text) – this is inexcusable for a book in 6-th edition!* Its index can be longer for a book of this nature and size.

⭐This was the book (2nd ed. paperback) I had at university many years ago and whilst the content was ok for my course and ability, I was not at all happy with the physical nature of the book. It had a 3mm thick solid plastic back binding which made it impossible to lay the book on the desk and for it to stay open. So when working with the book I had to use one hand to hold it open whilst writing with my other. I found this very irritating and not at all conducive to profitable work and ended up resorting to other texts.I had to literally break the back of the book to allow it to lay flat, but even now, there are still pages which close by themselves and other pages are falling out.My advice is to examine the book physically before you buy.Bottom line, – the 6th edition is now available.

⭐This may sound like a trivial point but my edition of this book (2nd ed, paperback) had a 3mm thick solid plastic binding which made it impossible for it to stay open by itself on the desk. Consequently I had to keep one hand on the book whilst I tried to make notes from it, and it was simply nonconducive to profitable work. The binding was so stiff that I had to place a weight in excess of 0.5 Kg on the book to keep it open, which of course tended to obscure the notes. It also gives a value of the force I had to hold the book down with if I was using my hand.I had to literally break the back to be able to work with it. Now pages are falling out, even though there are still certain pages that insist on closing by themselves!I can not speak for any other edition or the hard back, but my advice is definitely examine the book physically before you buy. A complete waste of time if it has the poor back. The content seemed as useful as any of the other maths book I had though.

⭐This book is lacking for sensible sturcture. Seems to put a reader into a maze and leaves them wondering where there at. There are enough topics but their too full of proofs to really understand what the book is trying to explain. This book would even be diffucult for a graduate student that’s using it for review. The author seems to be proving his mathematical talent instead of trying to explain the topics in a manor that’s understandable to the average reader.

⭐The best book out there for mathematics if your are an undergraduate in engineering. The book provides rigorous proofs for many of the material covered in most courses and goes even further giving you an edge if you are keen to read more about the subject. As for the reviews that say that this book is tough that is indeed true but if you just go through that steep learning curve and learn the mathematical notations you will be able to read even more advanced text books without being confused.

⭐This book will screw up …..

⭐Don’t buy this book unless you like a real challange, it’s very fast pacedand covers topics to a reasonable high level of understanding with only a few pages. It seems to me that Professor Jeffrey has lost sight of the fact that the people reading it don’t have the same ability to understand as he does, and he continuously uses the irritating phrase “and obviously” when it just isn’t obvious.
